Now, THAT'S realism! Wonder how they would fish, but I'll bet I can't afford to use 'em!

Graham goes by the name "Graham" I do believe. He's a great guy. He's a co moderator with me on a flytying board. He recently was asked to have his flies used in "House of Hardy" ads in British fishing magazines.
Now, just need to get him up here for some fishing.

I was just looking at this board to try and figure out when the best time to visit the NW for a fishing trip and found this topic. I just got back from visiting my parents in Gig Harbor WA, didn’t even bring a rod, but next time I go north, I need to handle some fish.
I will be heading off to work today with a huge smile from reading the comments made here, tying artistic flies is something I discovered about a year ago, and it provides me relaxation and stress relief from the daily grind. It can take hours to tye a single fly, but in that time I often daydream about catching pigs, and being somewhere nicer than the smog pit that I currently call home.
I am deeply grateful for the kind, supportive and friendly remarks you guys made, seriously, it’s truly appreciated. I very seldom fish realistic flies and have been making them to complete a display for my tying area, and it really has been fun learning, experimenting and practicing new tying and coloring techniques.
Like my buddy SH69 mentioned, House of Hardy contacted me a while back, and I sent a red spider off to England for a photo shoot, and a couple of months ago they sent me a Hardy Angel fly reel as a thank you, and just yesterday I saw the spider used in an ad for the first time. Man, what a great feeling that was! I believe there will be a number of different ads using the spider, by both Hardy and Grey’s, which are really different products from the same company. Here’s the link I found last night to the current ad that is in several British magazines, it’s the ad on the second row with the spider and fly rod. link to spider in ad
Thanks again!!!

Some outstanding work, just as good as those Czech realistic fly tyers husband and wife who do similar realistic flys.
I have been thinking about a Tadpole pattern lately.

Hi Fred, I would be happy to be here more often and contribute to the fly board, maybe I can even get in on a Tilla someday, only if SH69 is cooking, of course…LOL..
I have often admired the flies shown on this site, and figured that popping up with pics of realistics would be kind of weird? Seems that a lot of people really don’t understand what would drive someone to tye flies that wont be fished, and even more strange, that’s its not done for money. I just do it for fun.
I've never shown on the internet the super easy to tye fly that many of my big brownies were enticed to bite. It's tyed with pearl Christmas tinsel, covered with chartreuse rib with veil of white glo-bug yarn. And when that doesn’t work, I switch to the same fly, except its colored violet. I’ll tye some up very soon and post pics here.
About the realistic tying, I haven't done much this year, but I'm always willing to share what I'm doing and learning. Most of them are not tyed to be fished with; instead tyed because making them brings me relaxation and pleasure. I like working with my hands, installing solar panels by day, and when time permits, tying at night.
Looks like I need to learn more about the Rogue!!!!
I have a feeling BobK lives fairly close to some of the steams I go to every fall for the monster brownie action…

Any chance you could do a 'photo essay' showing how you 'construct' one of your works of art?? Fred

Graham -
I primarily fish Oak Orchard, Sandy and Irondequoit. These are all nearby streams.
Irondequoit is small, but can offer some PLEASANT surprises, but it is hit-or-miss fishing as a result of being a small stream. There is one section (Linear park) where it drops a hundred feet or so in a quarter of a mile! And BEST part is that it's only 1.7 miles from my front door!
Strange no one ever mentions the lake run RAINBOWS, as opposed to the steelies!! I have taken 'em up to ten lbs. The DIFFERENCE is that they are FALL spawners, and years ago, the state played with hatchery fish and light to make 'em that way. They display the rainbow colors all year, and you can easily verify this by seeing a pair of 'em spawning on their redds in late October and November.
I may have run into you while fishing the Oak or Sandy. I'm the "old fart" wearing a camouflaged "Jones" hat.

Hi Fred,
Here's a link to an article I did a couple of months ago, shows a number of techniques, its three pages long.
tying a dragonfly
Hey BobK, sounds like you live in E. Rochester? My wife grew up in Medina, and while visiting the in-laws years ago I discovered the amazing fishing oportunites in the area. Last year I lost a dime bright steelhead that was likely pushing 18 pounds, what a battle that was, the fish won. Seems like its always the one that got away that remains most visible when recalling a trip...LOL.. I'll be back there Nov 4th - 11th, and already feel excited. I know of a very small trib to a larger trib, that gets many more Coho than all the other streams. I have also noticed that the streams that have natural reproduction have the prettiest fish with the brightest colors. I live 51 weeks a year for my annual fall brownie trip. I look forward to meeting you this fall.
Here's a few pics from last years trip, all of these fish, and more, were caught in one week. Lake Run Brownies
Have you ever fished the Devils Hole on the Niagra? What a thrill that is, kind of scary though.
Cheers, Graham

Yeah, I do live in East Rochester. Moved here a few years ago, as my wife wanted to be near our grandchildren (that MAY have been a mistake - I am the "babysitter du jour"!) I actually live in Pittsford, but have an East Rochester mailing address.
My wife passed away last year, and I missed last season due to some surgery. But I'll be back at it this year, and in force! And the fishing here is great, as well. Salmon in the fall, followed by the fall-spawning lake run rainbows, then the big brownies, and steelies in the late winter/early spring.
Nice pictures, and yeah, those are pretty typical, nice fish for the tribs nearby. (EAT YOUR HEART OUT, BG!!)I got a 20 pounder a couple of years ago on a 6-wt, but never got any pics. I don't normally carry a camera along, as I carry too much gear anyway. They are beautiful fish, though, but I never keep any.
The lake fishing on a charter is fun to keep from getting bored during the summer hot weather, and I usually take one of my daughter's in-laws out on a charter. It's fun to watch the neophytes hook on to a BIG one, or a reel-sdreaming chinook!
Hope to meet up with you this fall, just PM me before you come out, and I'll send my phone number, etc. You picked an EXCELLENT time to come out!
No, I haven't fished Devil's Hole, as I have been warned that it's pretty hard to impossible to use a fly rod there.

Woof! I can see why you look forward to your annual trip 'back east.' Never hooked (at least that I know of) a 'Brownie,' but by the size of those .... ! I am missing something.

Yeah, Fred... and those of us who live here really enjoy it, too. And besides this, we have Chinooks, Cohos, lake-run (big) rainbows, the browns, and steelies. And, if you are REAL lucky, you might just hang into one of the rare Atlantics! I never have had THAT pleasure, but always have hope in the back of my mind. A very few lucky anglers do that each year.
Every fish you catch is a real TROPHY, and most folks want to stuff 'em and stick 'em on the wall, unfortunately.
These days, though, it's beginning to get downright CROWDED! But with the pics, you have seen the reasons.
Notice the small size of the streams in the pics, too - that is why I seldom have need for a 2-hander.

Graham, too bad you couldn't make it up here mid July. That's our huge "Cowtilla" event. That's when I really get the cooking started. LOL. Last year I think I cooked from about 1pm until about 3am (yup, 3 in the morning). Everytime I was about to shut the stoves off, someone would come off the river and I'd start a fresh batch of whatever was on the rack at the time (from homemade beer battered onion rings to rockfish, etc).
We'll get together one of these days Graham.
