Hello out there anyone around?? I check this site almost daily and it seems nobody has anything to say about rod building lately. Jump on my web site request a 2005/2006 catalog. These will be gone and replaced with new 2006/2007 in July with over 150 new items so collecters addition with a ton of information about rod parts old catalogs will be going in the trash everyone should have one of these if your serious about rods. www.batsonenterprises.com

thanks rainshadow, i don't know about the wrap, i don't want fancy, just correct. i don't like pretty rods, i just want a standard plain jane work horse, any rod builder is gonna hate me when i tell them i want white wrap, i know it will get dirty and i don't care. i don't want to pay for gours of wrapping, it will not get me any more bites. i have seen his work, if i had one of his rods, i would put it on the wall, he is a magician when it comes to rod building. i'm maybe a little abusive on gear, standard is fine for me,,,,,,,,, any suggestions?

the white wrap is a bit much? you don't need a pretty rod to whack'em. i realized this year that i have never seen one, why not? i will catch the same amount of fish. i knew that a rod builder would not be impressed. thanks for the reply.

NO, thats not it, white thread on dark blanks tends to be clear, the blank shows thru it making it tacky looking! Now there is a way to fix that, add another layer, either different color or white over white! Lots of other light colors do this as well!!!

I have finally found a little time to wrap a few rods lately. Finished a IF904 4 wt and a IF908 8wt. Put handles on a couple spinning rods. Just Ordered a couple IST1265 10'6 blanks for bobber rods. One in the Green and one in the matte. Have another dozen assorted Rainshadow blanks in the closet to get done. The great thing is they are all for me and my boys. Just have to find time to finish them.

ifish, You might want to think about a white wrap. There are several problems with wrapping a rod with white thread. First as CastawayChris points out any light color on a dark blank tends to show any little space in the wraps. It is very difficult to make it look decent. Second any epoxy coating will yellow some over time so the white will start to actually look amber colored in a fairly short period. Third color preserver will have to be applied to the white wrap or it will turn the color of the blank under it when the epoxy is applied. A little bit of white trim can look good but I do not think that you would be happy with all white wraps.

ifish, I forgot to mention that if you really want a rod that is wrapped with white and cannot be persuaded to use a darker color then tell your rod builder to paint the strips of the blank that will be under the thread and also the guide feet white and it will look a lot better. Acrylic paint that you get in any model shop works well.

Well, you can sure try it but I suspect that acrylic paint under any light colored wrap will give you a lot more vivid and consistant colors. The acrylic paint is available in a very wide variety of colors in any hobby shop, is cheap and is easy to apply. You can also use a different color of acrylic under light colored thread to get different effects if you want.

Brewer once built a rod using white thread...
He loaned it to his dad. When it was returned, the rod was solid black. His dad had thought that the white didn't look good, so he took spray paint and painted over the white.

Nivtup, we need to talk again...now that there are two baby Brewers, I am thinking I should order two matching customized and personalized rods for each.

Nivtup is a all around craftsman when it comes to rod building. For me, the fancy wraps look great, but don't catch more fish. Don has built me 7 rods know, ( 2 Lamiglas, 1 Sage and 4 Rainshadow). Plain janes for the most part, but high quality rods,(will have a couple more built this year). Don builds rods the way the customer wants them and stands behind his work.
