WORLLD CHAMP SPEY casting is coming!!
      #244955 - 05/07/06 01:33 AM

Found this bit of info on one of 'my' UK boards:

INTERNATIONAL OPEN SPEY CASTING CHAMPIONSHIP

For the third year, Ireland’s premier country sports event, the National Country Fair – will be hosting the International Open Spey Casting Championship at Emo Court, Portlaoise, County Laois on June 4th & 5th. Offering a total prize fund of €3,000 this prestigious game fishing event is the richest Spey casting tournament in the world, with a top prize of €1,500, second prize of €1,000 and third prize of €500.

The final of the event on Sunday afternoon provides the climax to the National Country Fair and attracts an enthusiastic crowd. Once again, former world champion, Hywel Morgan will be commentating on the finals of the world’s top event in the Spey casting discipline. The main criteria are a maximum rod length of 18ft and a floating line with a maximum diameter 2.5mm (head length optional). Spey casting technique is also carefully scrutinised.

2005 Champion, Scott Mackenzie, amazed competitors and spectators alike last year with his qualifying cast of 55.3m (current world record set at Emo Court ’05) as indeed did his winning cast of 49.83 metres. The young Scot, Andrew Armstrong, is expected to take up the mantle against leading exponents of the art from the USA, Australia, Britain and all parts of Ireland.

Entry forms and copies of the full rules are now available from the National Country Fair office (Leap Cottage, Kildalton, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny) or info@countryfair.ie. Alternatively, entry forms can be completed at the lakeside entry tent.

The qualifying heats for the final of the International Open Spey Casting Championship will be held on Saturday and Sunday morning over the weekend of June 4th and 5th.

In addition, a host of daily competitions, championships, tuition and rod testing are all laid out for visitors to take part in plus demonstrations by internationally renowned casting masters, Andy Murray, Hywel Morgan and Jan Porter - see www.countryfair.ie for more.

PLEASE KEEP US 'posted' on this event. Hundreds here (particularly in the western States) avidly follow this event annually.

Two of our 'main guys' are Dr Way Yin and Steve Choate. Interested to see if they attend this year as well as others from the US and Canada.

Items two: first, I was wrong, this is just a regional affair not the 'old Musto.' Willie's off by himself now, retired and guiding on the River Spey (if I remember correctly).

Willie still posts occationally at: http://www.flyforums.co.uk/index.php

Not a frequent poster anymore as I suspect he's doing a lot of "Gillie work." Gad, you get paid to walk around and tell people where to cast on some of the most famous rivers in the world ... then sit down and watch. Hell of a deal!

Hi Fred,
The Speyclave will be at peg leg on the fraser at chilliwack, on the 21st-22nd Oct, so far i have Scott doing a couple of demo's on Ness style, Gordie Armstrong doing distance and change of direction, i myself will do Alexander Grant style and Highland switch style, Francois will do underhand style, and a buddy from the Spey will be there to help people just getting into the Spey thing, and just waiting to hear from Way Yin and a couple more guy's.
There will be Clan Rods, Diawa incuding Scott's own range, some new Carron lines and a whole lot more stuff from the Spey, i will also have a raffle to help with the cost of getting these guy's over , with around $5000.00 in prizes.
There will also be the chance to get a private lesson from Scott, Gordie and myself on Sunday and monday.
Cheers Gordon.

Hi Fred,
The reason for the dates in Oct is because we are all working full time on the Rivers, Scott and Gordie Armstrong are both full time Ghillie's on the River Ness and there season does'nt finish til Oct 15th, so not easy to get away, they are both really busy with other shows and Schools through out the year, so this is the only time i can get them both there, should be good fun and there is no doubt they are the best, come along and see.
I will do a demo on Alexander Grant and a talk in the evening about the History of Speycasting , plus there will be some other guy's there to help, you will also get to try out Scott's newly designed rods, as well as the latest rods from Clan and all the new Carron lines.
And i like the sound of fishing for Chums and Kings, not going near the Vedder though, last time i was there guy's thought i was going to pole vault over the river with my 15ft rod, and i could have hooked 20 people either side of me it was so busy.
Hope to see you at the clave, o and did i mention there will be a few bottles of nice Speyside whiskey.
Cheers Gordon Macleod.

Now that's one way to really get my attention.

That said, I'm up in the air on bringing the motor home up (cost of gas would be off the wall) or driving up and staying at a motel. Any suggestions on places to stay?

Good info; especially the part about being close to Fred's Custom Tackle. There last October, spent a wad! and walked away with one of their hats sported on my head. It remains my hat of choice even today (retired the 20 year old Sage) on/off the river.

Hi Fred,
And everybody else into the Spey think, Gordie Armstrong won the Speycasting event in Ireland as i thought he would, his and Scott's tickets are booked for the Chilliwack Clan Gathering, also Marius Wroblewski who was first equal with Gordie at Spey o Rama will be coming to do a demo on Underhand PNW style, i am in Washington next week, then up to Fred's in Chilliwack to meet up with Rick Bergler, who is helping me get this thing all sorted out.
But thats Gordie Armstrong won every Comp he has entered this year.
And i will get a new thread started with all the detail in a couple of weeks when i get back from BC.
Cheers Gordon.

COOL! Pass on my best to "Fred" at Fred's Custom Tackle; his hat is perched on top of my head here as I type. Interesting thing is since I purchased same .. NO ONE on the river has forgotten my name. Wonder why?

One of the things (Oh and I got loootttsss of things there last October .. think Kid in a Candy Store!) was a large arbor reel called a "Kamloops MC." One of the smoothest reels/drags I've ever run into regardless of 'branding.'

That said, no idea who actually made this reel as I suspect it's been 're-branded' from something else for sales in Canada. Could you see if you can get the 'whose is it really?'

Don't recall what I paid for it, but worth EVERY penny spent!

Hi Fred,
Just packin and ready to head back to the Spey tomorrow, i think the reel you have is made by Redl Sports http://www.redlsports.com/ They don't have anything on their website as of yet but you might want to bookmark it for future reference.

I'll post more on the Clan Gathering (aka spey clave) when I get settled back into work etc.

Hi Fred,
Just putting the detail of the Clan Gathering (speyclave) together, waiting on one other guy but it will be on the 21st-22nd Oct in Chilliwack, Scott and Gordie Armstrong will be doing private lessons on the Monday, don't think they will last long as they will only be 6 guy's per class.
Will post the details after the CLA, found the perfect little shop for you in Grantown on Spey, it's called The wee dram, every type of whiskey and nothing else.
Will start a new thread in a couple of weeks.
Cheers Gordon.

'Speaking' of Chilliwack, talked to Fred's Custom Tackle this AM. Purchased a 9-12 'Dragon Fly' "Kamloops MC" reel from them this past October for Summer run fishing 'down here' on the Rogue.

Reel worked like a charm for the first couple of trips ... and then ... "coffee grinder." No clue of the why of it, but called Fred's (no relation) and asked where I could send same for repair(s).

Fellow said send it back and they'd send me a new one!! Now THAT is customer service! (Maybe because I'm the only person in the southern half - maybe all? - of Oregon that "sports" one of their hats on the river? And a lot of folks ask 'where's that?' And a lot of these folks do go to BC to fish ... a win-win?)

Fred, I gots me one of them thar hats. I even wear it occasionally in Oregon. It's plenty worn, and looks pretty bad, but it is a memento of some great fishing trips, and making good friends. Peter and Fred are awesome guys, and we still e-mail occasionally.

I need to get up there during steelie season for a little fly steel action. Hmmmm, ya think maybe a mini-tilla?
