Hello all I was once a trout fisherman and with my local laws not allowing me to keep them im switching over to steelhead fishing.IM curious if anyone has any tips for me.I would like to start off with a bobber of some sort and a jig.Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.I have been looking on the net for basic line setup.I dont have any freinds that fish so basicaly what ever i learn will have to be on my own.I live on the Clackamas River in Oregon.I have lived here for 28 years "whole life" and never been steelhead fishing and would like to start in a few days but dont want to rush it.I appreciate any tips suggestions ect. Thanks for your time.

I've always thought I was normal and the rest of the world have there priorities all wrong
First suggestion is to dedicate a room for fishing gear.
Second is don’t drink river water.
Welcome to the board
Excellent advice Tony...

Chet - "New to steelhead fishing "never been yet"
Never!? Well then, git da helll outta here mon! We don't like no novice wanna-be steelheaders nosin' round our site for secret fishing info! Hmmm. Hey y'all, what should we do to this here new feller?
Ok, j/k (just kidding) . We like to help newbies to learn and enjoy the great recreation of steelhead and salmon fishing. Welcome aboard.
That is right about browsing the site for tons of good info, both general and specific technical - perhaps best done by using the search feature and plugging in words such as 'steelhead tips', float (or bobber) fishing techs, jig fishing tips., etc.
btw, using small 1/16th and 1/8th oz. summer steelhead jigs with low water steathy floats is a good way to start fishing for steelhead. It's less complicated, especially in regards to not losing a lot of gear. And you know when the fish bite by watching your float movements or dunking. It can also help you learn to read water quicker (recognizing fish holding water in the rivers). ... And after some intial browsing and other reading, don't hesitate to ask questions on here. We could use some more - it's been a slow spring for both fishing and NW fishing site activity/discussion.
THEN ~ if you really want a much faster learning curve toward advanced steelhead and salmon fishing techs and secrets, access my book website below in my sig. box, by just clicking on it. Be safe, and have fun! Good fishing luck out there, Chet.

Wow,thanks for the welcomes and the tips.Tonight i walked down to the river where i will be hunting fish and i already have a few questions.I did the search but i think there so basic of questions that nobody has talked on them.
I will be using a plastic bobber with a jig.The bobber is going to be fixed as in wont move up and down. One spot looked about like it was 4 feet deep and down the river it looked more like 8ft deep. When i go to the deeper part of the river i want to move my bobber to 7 or 8 ft correct? Im sure the jig needs to be close to the rocks as possible. Thanks again for the warm welcomes and for the tips.Im off to search for some more info on steelheading
I cant wait till i go tomorrow even though its going to be pretty later 8am "I have other things i need to do"..As for getting a dedicated room for my fishing stuff i dont know about that The room i have set aside already is for my guns.I just mite have to half and half it when i really get into this

Welcome! I had never caught a steelhead myself, until joinng this site. In my limited experience, I would say the best peice of advice would be to fish where the fish are. Research your river, find out where the fish hold & when they are in your river. And oh yeah, dont over look the

The best peice of advice I ever got about fishing for big fish was two-fold, keep your hooks needle sharp and your drag set so when the fish takes that inevitable first run for freedom you don't break off! Good Luck!

Welcome to the insanity we call steelhead fishing.....caught a couple last week and I forgot how much I love it so.....My advice is to learn the river, study the river when it's low so you'll know the boulders, depressions and such of the river, when the rivers up you'll know where the fish will be holding.....learn to read water....seams, pockets...etc......most of all, have funa and join in with others of your passion...i've learned tons being on this board and the people are just plain...."top notch".....Fish On!!!!!!

Chet come and experience Blue Creek on the Cowlitz at the 5th Annual MadCowTilla the weekend of July 16th. Boat and bank opportunities for summer runs and from the early catches so far it may be a good catching event. There will be a jig tying event at it and several people are always sharing methods ideas. Hmmmm maybe even a Poof Ball tying class? Anyway lots of good people to meet and there is always the nitely feasts.

ok, my contribution to the 10 most needed things for steelhead fishing. #10 CASH! You'll need it not only to buy tackle and bait but ice, GAS and a lawyer to help you read and understand the regs. #9 PINK WORMS! ...I guess...I have some because I am supposed to, never have hooked a fish with 'em though but ya gotta have 'em just in case. #8 Lead. Various kinds from shot to pencil to pyramid and bank sinkers. Ya gotta have couple truck loads of lead. #7-4 Guides, friends or aquaintences who will take you fishing and show you their techniques. #3 Willingness to learn and try new things. (like silly looking pink worms) #2 Patience. Dont leave home without it. If you do forget your patience then go crappie fishing!(and take those dang pink worms with you.) #1 Sense of humor Aint no point spending the time, money and effort if you dont have fun and share some laughs and good times with people you like. Or if at a 'tilla spending time with people you dont particularly like but they have a boat and nobody else likes 'em either so they have an open seat for you.
Just get out there and start figuring it out. I spent from the age of 12 to 22 kickin rocks trying to find out how to catch the buggers. At the age of 22 I thought I had it figured out but then I got invited to fish with a man who truly did have it figured out and realized that I learned basicaly nothing during those first 10 years of my steelheading life.
Now we have the internet and seemingly infinite resources. Try some things, ask advice, check here for tips and then tweak and customize the techniques to fit your style and your river. As you gain experience you'll figure that out. Its kinda like explaining what mojo is to your grandfather. Cant really describe it but you know what it is when it happens.

stick with calling it a bobber, don't get sucked into that float bullarkie. tie your knots correctly and test them for strength before you cast. just because it looks like a good knot doesn't mean it will hold....
oh, don't horse (over play to tight) your fish, fish are to hard to comeby for beginners to have that 1st steelhead pop you off.

Grab a float enough weight to cast some fresh prawn from the store couple 1/4 oz pink/white jigs put the fresh prawn meat on it (thumbnail size) go fishing. Try to get it near the bottom (not on it)as much as possible in as much water as you can find to drag it across. Do that enough and you will find where they hide then do it again in spots that are similar. don't forget to get excited when one tries to commit suicide on your gear.

just snap the tail section off and thread it on your SHARP hook
invest in a pack of float stops (<$2) to be able to fish from 2' to 8' of water
to bleed a fish out, just slice through the gills and hang it on a forked branch of a nearby tree

Yeah, Chet it's a bobber, don't let them fool ya. Trying to sound all high and mighty with that float crap.
Chet you were asking about bleeding a fish, it's pretty easy. Bonk it so it doesn't flop all over hell, then open up the gill plate and cut through the gills. Blood will pump out, and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys.I went fishing for only about an hour an a half today.I didnt get any bites but sure had some fun.I think im going to be buying a dvd or something with jig fishing that teaches some basics.I could tell I was doing something wrong while casting and letting it float but sure had a fun time.I think this week im going to buy some lures also.I know how to fish lures for trout so im sure it will be the same just bigger tackle.I cant wait untill the river that i live on goes down a few more feet I will be able to fish better holes "Bank fishing only for me". Thanks again guys i look forward to reading and asking more questions.I cant wait till i can post my first steelhead picture.

Chet how about a few questions answered..
How long is your fishing rod? What type line? What lb test is your line? Color of your line?
Float/bobber setup your using?
Did you notice your line sinking and dragging your float along? Did the float move like it was dragging bottom? Did you see anybody catch any near you?
