Chet if your in a boulder bed it won't matter if its slinkies or lead you will be retying and wish you had stayed with your float. Drift fishing is an art to master and it doesn't come at a cheap price of a few casts.
You can also put a float above that rigging so it won't wrap around rocks and fish it like a jig. But DO drag bottom with this style. More than one way to skin the kitty

o yea

remember that shrimp gel? do you have any fuzzy yarn or fat yarn? white, pink, orange, black, chartreuse(yellowish/green) cherise (pink but darker)

add the 2 together and presto Chet!

put 2-3" yarn in your egg loop if you don't have a shrimp or if you want to experiment

The only thing in my head is that if i drift i know the bait is on the bottom but when jig'n beeing a newbie i could be a foot or 2 off.Or if im good on the jib where i cast it out 30 ft down the river it mite be deeper.

Well i went at 530 this morning and didnt get anything. There was a guy in a boat where i wanted to fish first so i had to go upstream a little bit.An hour or so later he took off and i went there and the sun was starting to hit the water .My first cast im drift fishing and I feel this nibble and im thinking some good thoughts but it was just trout eating my sandshrimp. If I was able to catch trout and keep trout i would for sure have a lot today. Then never got on the big hook though.
The water is still a couple of feet high. This meens more rapids where i was fishing and less place for float fishing.I dont know if I ever will catch one..

I have some advice. Invest all your time to steelheading, become totally obsessed with it,and spend a lot of money on tackle . If you do that you will start catching fish...eventually. I also read as much as possible about it,and there are books on FLOAT fishing that will help you out a bit -AA

keep at it, no one who catches fish regularly learned in the first week, pay attention to any little things you can, right now the objective is to learn as much as you can, prepare yourself better for the next day, every day. 5:30 was too late today, get there a half hour earlier, if you see fish caught, pay good attention to where exactly it happened. i caught my first couple of steelhead on accident, it will just click one day. like marty said, take a pic of the water you are fishing, maybe we could help out with where the fish may be and the best method to fish that kind of water. persaverance pays in this sport, keep at it.

I almost forgot!!This time of year wear polarized sunglasses and really be stealthy from the bank. You will be surprised where you see fish holding sometimes, places where many people pass up.Remember this is a sport which we never graduate from. You will in time realize that some of those trips where you caught nothing taught you as much as the days you do. It is natures classroom, and the fish is the icing on the cake.I'm excited for you-Robert

never underestimate what polarised glasses can do for your fishing. brewer wears them on the river at all times. i have taken fish entirely based on spotting them first, then targeted that fish. there has been many times when i have spotted fish, only to have a mystery fish that i didn't even see, bolt 15 yards outa no where and detonate the eggs.
you can learn alot by watching fish behavior, only with polarised glasses can this be done though.

Chet I checked out your pics and it looks pretty "fishy" to me!What you want to do is go upstream as far as you safely can and cast just to the side of the deep slot closest to you and let er' drift.Once that drift is done stay at that spot and cast a couple of feet farther into the slot, and so on untill you are casting almost to the other side. Then take about three to five steps downstream and repeat the forementioned process. This is called "covering water".Work your way downstream untill you can't safely wade anymore.I should mention for clarity to wade slowly and not to make big splashes as to not scare the fish! You want to find water that has good cover for the fish to hide in Ie..deep slots, water with broken surface, behind rocks and logs and overhanging trees.Picture #16 had a couple of things that caught my eye. There appears to be a rock in the upper left of the photo.I would hike about ten yards upstream from that rock and cast straight out letting your rig drift just to the inside of it.BE READY!I'd be willing to bet you'll get a solid tug just as your offering goes by.If you feel confident in your casting ability you could try casting so your rig goes between the rock and the far bank, under those overhanging bushes. It might get hairy trying to wrassle' as fish from there but sometimes those make for the best fishing stories!Good luck and keep us up to date!

Thanks for the comments guys.I would say its at least 10 ft deep on the far side of the river at least.Should i just stick with drifting..The rock that is in picture 16 is a huge clay rock about 15 ft long and 10ft wide..Its been there for years we used to float out to it and wade our intertubes there.I dont think i could use a float unless i figure out how to make my line go 10 ft deep.

With a sliding float and enough weight you could do it, just set the stopper to the right depth. Waters pretty fast so you'd have to cast upstream aways to get it down and guide to both sides of that rock. That's the beauty of floats, that's almost unfishable from the shore with out the ol "bobber". Don't forget to work both sides of seams when drifting your bobber.

Chet I see a lot of wasted casts in this water, with a few honey slots and potential pockets along the far edge.
My focus would be leaving the far 1/3 of the river alone (to fast) and the 1/3 on my side alone (not deep enough)

perhaps we can talk image to image to be more specific. But for the general pictures I would concentrate on the areas contained in images 13-17 for my fishing. Image 17 says fishy water to me.

that does look fishy Chet

work the water in 17 very metodically, one section at a time near that brush on the far side

and that big rock in 16 will have fish around it, so get deep into that drift and be ready for a 'tap tap' take, then bust 'em good after you take up your slack line and be ready for some fun!

OK lets not lead the man in the wrond direction
Myself if the water is low and clear I would be fishing the faster water that has more oxygen and cover.. The faster water in pic 1 would be where I would start in low conditions..17 is fishy looking..Sure fish it but dont pass up the faster water especialy when the water warms up a bit this summer..Chet there are so many variables its hard to touch on all of them without a 10,000 page book..sunny,cloudy,warm,cold,low water, high water, cold water, warm water, berometeric pres, weather changes and the list goes on....Just my .02

good point timber i agree, the water marty pointed out looks like a good place to practice spoon techniques,,,,before we get to deep here, what kind of gear are you using? maybe we can narrow down some other problems for you if you tell us what kind of rod and reel you are using. how heavy is your line, how long is your rod, spinning or casting, what is the line rating on your rod. matching your gear is also a critical part of catching fish. hardware is a good way to cover water, i would not go out in the summer and toss spinners all day, but you may be able to learn alot about a hole by using hardware the last 10 minutes that you are there. i always start off with bait, it is a subtle presentation, when i am done fishing that water i will try hardware. when fishing spinners, i like to reel them fast down stream, you cast it as high up the current as you can and reel pretty quick to keep up with it. spoons are kind of the opposite, you want to swing those as long as possible, spoons are a little harder to master, the objective is to swing the spoon all the way down while keeping a natural throb in the spoon the whole time, ask marty about this tech. i just started doing it, i have alot to learn on this technique. when drift fishing, i would reccomend using bait, they hold on longer. i do not drift many artificials anyways, i like bait, sand shrimp or crawdad tails would be good baits to try, if you ever get your hands on fresh eggs, butterfly the skein, cut it into chunks and put it in a ziploc with enough borax to cover all of the eggs when you shake them, that is by far my favorite bait for steelhead, just don't waste your money on store bought eggs, i would rather have a sand shrimp than store bought any day.

What I see in 17 is that steep bank that carrys down straight into the water. Then if you follow the bank you see it start to mellow down stream as it enters the water.
I would turn square with the river where the picture was taken there is a / upsloped bottom in that zone.
I am a drift fishing bait thug by choice, the rest to expand my experience/techniques.

Chet is just starting so he should be doing more of this..

Another thing in those pictures show some really large rocks for the beach.. gonna be a drift fishing nightmare in the wrong parts of that hole as the lead sinks in the cracks.
