if you find some structure like a rock in the hole or a tree stump, clay shelf.. fish will find there sweet spot behind it.

that's funny marty, i was just thinking, steelhead bite so good, it doesn't even seem like you have to set hook, then i remember how much of a struggle it was to get #1, i caught my first couple of steelhead on accident.

Number one seemed like the hardest to get for me too! I started fishing for them when I was 14 and gave up because I couldn't catch one. I decided I'd put a berkley power egg on a hook and fish for trout and sure enough I caught my first steelhead. Quite a kick with 4lb line and an ultra lite trout rod! Keep at it and you'll get one!

Can't repeat and stress more than keep at it...i fished off and on for several years, freezing my arse off, traveling down tothe cowlitz and blue creek...finally got that oh soo familiar tug....winter steel on...got him to the bank, bonked him and puffed the ol chest out....quit fishing basically that year for about ten years....started fishing about 3 1/2 years ago....i've hooked and landed oh soo many more steel than I ever thought....90% from the bank....boating is fun and i love the comradery that you get from fishing next to someone that you don't know, but....by the end of the day....fishless or not, you had a great time, hope the guy is there next time and you can't wait to go again....keep at it Chet!
There is nothing better than Family,God or Country that is better than waiting for the light of day as you cast to thet gray waters of a river waitin for that tug....believe me brotha, i've put in my time and although I don't think I'm that 10%, I sure feel like it! Keep casting!!!!

I have a questions and just felt like posting it here because it just makes sence to keep my newbie questions in one thread..

Im curious to know if the steelhead im fishing for are moving up stream or are moving downstream.Since im fishing for hatchery fish "fin clipped" im assuming they are heading downstreem to go to the ocean but I could be wrong..Gonna get up earily tomorrow and do some fishing.

right now they are headed upstream Chet

they think it's important to eat the salmon eggs that come from the soon to spawn salmon (that was a hint) 1 or 2 single eggs on a #1 hook could do the trick if you fish a section with a broken surface and 2-5 feet deep

but your water may have hatchery released smolts in the area (look like small trout, clipped fin(s)) that are feeding and will be making their way downstream sometime later

the first few pictures i would say the water is 4 to 5 ft deep..Image 20 at the far end of the pictures is where i have been fishing and is the spot where i posted the last pics of where i was fishing. Thanks for any info. The pictures suck because its sunny out but where im standing is shaddy. i just took some pictures standing in my yard so i just covered the whole river. http://www.cascadeaccess.com/~cchheett/fishingpics2/

If that waters in front of your house then "you suck"...just kidding...i'd sell my house and move there in a heartbeat...no doubt that water holds fish.....I usually by an oregon license to fish some of the Or tribs for summers..maybe we can hook up later in the season...keep at it man....my personal opinion is to use a bobber and ? to get your first hookup and the joy of your life....jig,bait will do the trick...if your so inclined..even a fly would do the trick....tight lines!

you are gonna have to use low light to your advantage Chet, considering it looks to be shallower than 6' in most places- so try to select the best looking spots where a piece of structure is (big rock under water or overhanging limbs to create a shady spot) in the deepest part of the water

good luck

listen chet your stressing out over not hooking steelhead yet. you got a paradise drift in your freakin back yard dude! 99% of us here do not have what you got. we would give our eye teeth for what you got. all of us here have to compete with others for fish. you got this entire run all to yourself right? thier there chet just keep at it. you have 4 pages of tips, the rest is just river time. i would try to mentally map the entire underwater drift if nothing else. try to put knowledge into every cast and snag. when you do this you gain more insight to the run. then one day it will all click. trust me it will click.

not bad for a yella poler
I personally like pic #22
you got yourself some fishy water there!!
without going back and reading the whole thread I beleive you said you fished trout and was thinking of getting some hardware? DO IT!!not saying throw metal all the time but it will help cover all aspects and also help the monotany of looking at a damn float drifting by time after time, and it works!!!
I know you must be getting information overload, but get some spoons and maybe a spinner or two.remember (real)gold reflects about 90% of the light, silver is about 60% and nickel is something like 30%(I know I'll get hammered for not knowing the exact reflextions, but what the hell I spoon feed fish)so take in to account the light level/water clarity and throw accordingly.for example you will not want to toss a gold spoon if it's sunny out and you have gin clear water, you'll scare the hell out of any fish in the area(drainage)might as well go swimming.yet a gold spoon in the early hours before it gets very light might just score.
'practice make perfect'thats why we all keep practiceing.

Hey Chet,

re: "...Not even any bites"...if you are drift fishing then you may have gotten bites that you are unaware of. (but if you are using bobber/jig, then you can see the bite.)
I've been steelheading for many many years and I bet that I still don't detect half the bites (I mostly drift corky/yarn and sometimes adding shrimp or eggs too). But I do catch more than my share. Detecting the bite is the hardest part. Assuming there are fish in your drift, then it may just be minor adjustments you need. Years ago, after I accidentally caught my first steelie on a spoon, it took me a year of regularly fishing to get my second one. What finally got me on track was that I gave up trying to find solitude. I went to a more popular spot, watched a guy nail two summer runs, and I chatted with him and copied exactly what he was using/doing. My gear was too big and bright for the conditions and I hadn't learned to detect the subtle "bite". So after copying him, Bingo!
After that you can learn to adjust for differeing water conditions. Like I always say, " *learning* how to catch steelhead is the hardest fishing task in the world...but once you learn how to catch them, it's the best kind of fishing in the world."
Best of luck to you!
