Found a small creek with small garnets. Hours and hours of pickins. I would like to find some bigger garnets. Anybody know where there at it Washington?

I used to pick up garnets in a couple of streams in South Dakota. If you head upstream toward the source, they should get bigger.

There are some sources of larger "specimen" garnets in the north cascades of it you want the star garnets you'll have to come over to north Idaho and get muddy. How Big do you want? Baseball sized??

The site name in North Idaho is Emerald Creek. It is a pay to play location. I beleive for $10 a day you can hop in a hole and the mud and scrape the bedrock and pull star garnets. I ahve not dug there for two years but it is productive for some and not so for others. It all depends on the amount of work put into the effort. In my "younger" days a bud and I would move 10-12 cubic yards of material for 40-60# of cutting material. Mind you not too many garnets were the dodocahedron but halves and such. Still imo the nicest 6 ray star garnet material I have cut and seen on the market. The North Cascades site is found in Lanny Ream's book of mineral collecting in Washington.

The coolest thing to find in Emerald creek are the caddis larva cases made full of garnets. One of these days I'm going back there and pick up a ton of 'em and use the cases to tie up some display flies.
