Newbie Needs help
      #248549 - 06/06/06 03:23 AM

Hello! I posted here the other day but I dont see that post anywhere, so I'll re-do it now.
I am new to the steelhead/salmon game on the fly. I would sure love to nail my first steelie this summer! I live in Central Oregon and will be fishing the South Santiam, Deschutes, and maybe Rogue rivers. Is anyone familiar with these areas? I guess I am in need of pointers on technique, flies, you name it! I went out in an attempt a couple weekends ago but no luck. Lost of folks say that you are likely not to even get a fish on your first season. But with vetrans like you guys I am out to prove them wrong. So what flies should I be tying up? Got pictures i can look at? I'll be swinging an 8 wt around. What size tippet to use? What about nymphing? As you can tell, I need a lot of help. ANY AND ALL advice would be great! Thanks guys. Put me on a fish this summer and I'll be one happy guy! Much love...

Jake

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/or/nwis/uv?14339000

Thanks Tony; sorry I missed your post Jake. Up in Portland for a few days, back home now.

The above link is the water flow for the Rogue at Dodge Bridge, mid point on the upper 30 miles of the River. This is the flow marker that many of us use to get a realistic view of water conditions. The other is the 'fish/flow' hot line at 800 472 2434.

That number will give you the flow out of Warm Springs dam plus the fish counts through/over Gold Ray dam. GR is another 15 miles down from Dodge Bridge. 'Subtracting' DB from the dam out flow number will give you (approx) inflows from the feeder streams such as Elk Creek, Butte, etc.

Lost of folks say that you are likely not to even get a fish on your first season.

Some trueth to this, but it is more a function of the size of the river as well as the size of the fish runs. Example: It will be much harder to catch the first on on the Deschutes than on the upper Rogue. During the summer the D will have 5 or 6 times the water flow of the Rogue so the fish will be far more spread out over the river system.

So what flies should I be tying up? Got pictures i can look at?

Google the RogueRiver fly fishers web site, go to nymphs, etc., and you'll find great colour photo's of the main fly's we use "down here" on the Rogue. The Otis Bug is the base fly we tend to use (weighted) with a trailer of a Prince Nymph (bead head) as a trailer. Some even use a three fly rig when fishing with a spinning rod/float.

On the Deschutes, these flys can also be effective, but not as effective as their 'local patterns.' Zip over to the Spey Pages web site http://speypages.com/speyclave/ and run that question by the fellows. Many of them fish the 'Big D' year round and are far better qualified to respond than I.

I'll be swinging an 8 wt around. What size tippet to use?

An 8wt rod would be effective kit for the Descutes as it's a BIG river, even in the summer. The Rogue's flow is much smaller and you'll find a 6 or 7 wt rod more in line when our flows drop below 1500 cfs.

Tippet size, 6 to 10 pound is more than adequate for the Rogue. Do to river size 8-12 is a better bet on the Deschutes.

What about nymphing?

On the Rogue, this is the way you'll hook 90 per cent of your fish. On the Deschutes, most will be on 'the swing' type of presentation. Reason being is Rogue fish tend to be 'bottom huggers,' either you're down there with them, or you'll get a hell of a lot of casting practice.

Deschutes fish seem to be far more willing to chase a fly presented in the water coloum. (Or that's been my experience anyway.)

Use of sink tips is frequently warrented on the Deschutes during the summer; infrequently on the Rogue save for some of the deeper/faster runs. Here the use of 10-15 foot leaders (single hander vs. spey rods) is the most common way of 'doing business.'

Use of indicators is a personal option, but many of the best fly rodders never leave home without them. Rare to see one on a spey rod line ... unless the guys from Kalifornia.

Anything I've missed?

nice work Fred

Jake- if that doesn't help enough, trade in the fly rod for a 9' ML action spinning outfit w/12# Ultragreen and 8# UG leader, tie on a 1/0 Owner super needle, scoop a wad of moss out of the river with the net, pick out the best lookin crawdad, bait up and now you're using the best local pattern I think. + = + =

Hahaha. No need to trade in the fly rod now. Thats almost blasphemous. A man CAN serve two masters (bait and fly fishing) for he will love the one, and NOT hate the other (a little play on some scripture there). Crawdads huh? Hmmmm. I know where to find some around here. Maybe I'll go round some up before my next trip. Some guys just use the tails, right? Or do I skewer the whole thing on there? I guess I can ask that one in the other forum and stick to flies while I'm here. So what about Chinook? Same flies, same tactics?

Just kidding. If anyone has a digi camera and could take a quick snap shot for me I would be very greatful. Sorry to incinvenience ya. Thanks.

Jake, PM me your address and I'll send you a few in different colours/configurations. The'Bug' is the easist fly you could ever tie.

One 'local variation' is called "Agent Orange." One of the board members visted the Rogue a short while back and carted a few of these back to Idaho. Apparently it's turned into THE fly of choice for their 'B run' fish.

Vis a vis Kings, we have two runs here (not counting Cohos); a spring run (just really getting under way now) and a fall run. The springers rarely will take a fly, most are (sorry!) flossed on a long leader.

The fall Kings are another game plan entirely. These buggers (even if the water is closed to king fishing above (Hogg Creek boat ramp below Grants Pass) will CHOMP the same patterns as summer run steelhead. Interesting to be geared for 5-7 pound fish and hook something closer to 30.

interesting Fred-

I witnessed several years ago, a Japanese tourist standing above a certain "no angling" zone and hooking 40 or 50 'nooks on a black somethin or nuther in less than an hour. He later passed me on the way down stream (back into the angling permitted area) and asked if it was closed for angling where he had been.

Black flies seemed to be

Ahhhh, a clarification is needed here. Appears I 'painted with too broad a brush' with my 'springer comment.' This applies to the run in the Rogue only (upper river). All these (I'm sure there are exceptions)are fish from the Warm Springs hatchery located just below the dam.

Lower in the river (very low) they make take a fly if you find a school of the buggers. The fall run fish will jump on a fly all the way to their spawning beds (all natural spawn fish).

So you're all up to speed, I put Jake on to a local web site that has excellent colour photos of our common steelhead patterns (Otis Bug included).

The 'other local boy done good' is called "Agent Orange." There I've hit a wall finding a photo/tieing instructions. That said, hit the 'supply shop' yesterday and purchased a bit more of the materials I needed (the leg material is quite different than the OB) and tied up several last night.

As I was sipping away at a good Wadka ... maybe Jake will be able to tell the 'first fly' from the last.

Awesome, Fred. Looking forward to it. Fishing the Metolius River this week. Anyone ever fished it? She's a beauty of a little spring creek. No steelhead or salmon (besides the Kokanee) but some mighty tempermental bulltrout in there. I've seen 30+ inchers. My biggest was 28. Hoping to put my brother-in-law (15) on a nice one. Been meaning to post some photos of some ties I whiped up the other night for everyone's approval. Cant find my USB cable, so stay tuned.

Hey Fella's. Sorry it has been a while. I lost my connection here at work and have not been able to get online. Anyone know of anyone who might be able to help me trouble shoot?
Fred.. I got your package about a week ago. Thank you much friend. I have been using them to re-create my own. Thanks a million! I am looking into planning a trip on the Rogue in August. What can I expect at that time of year? What time of year is the hottest for steelies? If you guys had two or three days to fish it, when would you go and WHERE? Keep in mind that I am on foot. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay Jake; been 'off line' for a few days (read that yard work and tending my grape vines). August will put you at the end of the spring king salmon run in the upper river and well into the early stages of the summer run steelhead season. There should be a considerable number of fall kings in the Grants Pass area also by that time.

Interesting part (numbers wise) this year is the spring king count is WAAAAAY DOWN below it's normal numbers (like down by 2/3's?) and the numbers of summer runs is twice what it would be normally through the Gold Ray fish counter.

Will be interesting to see where this ends up.

Anybody done any salt water fishing at all? I may be spending a couple of days in Brookings in August. Anyone fill me in on the area? I plan on grabbing a charter for Chinook but if there are some do-it-yourself options in the immediate area, I'm open to that.

Jake, the 'easy way' is to 'Google' the local newspaper. Name is the "Pilot" if memory serves. Gater bait fish are already collecting in the bay off Brookings/Harbor so you may be in 'good shape.' Majority of the king run (again, if memory serves) enters the river in late! August-October.
