save your $$$$ practice and muxcle memory is all one needs...
get decs new book should be a better read then simons, more akin to what most of us do.

Well, Simon's book is THE best put into print after Hugh Fakus's (sp?) done half my life time ago. The point of this is you can't cart the big one about.
For the new guy it's probably well worth every penny. For the reasonable caster who just had the 'wheels fall off' it's probably a good reference to have at hand. That said, it will be your partner who has the book in hand watching you flail way/thrash/trash the river surface.
The 'one watching' can pick out the problem(s) and suggest pointers. (Trust me, the wheels DO come off at times. You look sky-ward and say "God, WHY ME!!??")

i beg to differ, simons book wa good, but it was not as good as his video.
imho he is better on dvd than print, had the book and sold it 2 weeks later, opened it once to thumb thru it.
i always maintain you can't learn how to cast from a book or dvd. they are good tools, but the nend all answer is go out with someone that casts better than you watch learn, have them watch you and when they talk to you about your shabby casts LISTEN!!!!
hanging out with great casters make you better. i learned my stuff from the boyz from wisconsin, very good group with a 2 hander..

The books alright but their is nothing like on the water practice and repetition. Not seen Simons video just as well my attention span these days would not allow me to get much out of it.

Stu, I'd have to agree with you. That said, if the DVD had come out before the book ... print sales would have been pretty darned slow imho.

Rivers are all still high around here so only 'grass casting' at this point. Tomorrow/Tuesday looks like a good day to blow away some time and give her a good go.
Just got a new Hardy Salmon Mach II (#8) for her as one other line. 'Grass casting' of the Hardy is a dream!! Suspect even better on the river.
Gary Anderson 'nailed it' with this rod design.
