Is that a .223 case with the neck expanded to .270, or is it a different proprietory case? I've seen a number of the other uppers folks make for the AR which have larger calibers athta are generally wildcats.

It's a shortened .270 case, Andy...6.8mm x 43mm
It's the same height as a .223 Rem or 5.56mm x 43 Nato, but bigger around. The mags are alomst the same, were a 5.56 holds 30 a 6.8 holds 25, and a 5.56 holds 20 a 6.8 holds 15.
This is now a production round, and is being offered on many factory bolt action long guns.
Our government has been testing the 6.8 Rem SPC the last 2 years as a possible replacement for the 5.56 x 43mm...

Cool! Be nice to have a little more oomph. What are the muzzle velocities on that?

The 6.8 Remington round is ACTUALLY based on a "variant" case - the old .30 Remington, as used in their older line of Model 14s and Model 8s (0ld pump and semi auto rifles respectively.)

If I remember correctly it was modified by some of the guys working in the armory for 5th group. They were looking for a round with more energy transfer without having to carry completely different equipment. The round fits standard mags with only a slight modification.
I've read about some test hunts with it and it performed well on deer sized critters.
What did that upper set you back? Is it a flat top?

Hmmmm, all I know it is less than 2 yeas old, and just coming out from the ammo makers, it's so new it's not even in most new reloading books.
Just went down and bought reloading dies, new empty brass, primers, powder and bullets to start reloading.
Andy, I'm going to start by reloading
Sierra 90 Gr. Hollow points
26.0 grains of 4198
should hit 2950-3000 fps with a 16" M4 barrel

That 90 grain load should be instant death to some coyotes.
I talked to Bob Schuetz today to arrange a tour of the plant. Should be fun, hopefully some time this week. Need anything?

Nope Andy, Tom has me covered, when he dropped off my 6.8 upper last Thursday, he took my K8 upper with him back to the Oly plant to flute it's 20" Bull Barrel...1.5# off the nose of this pig will be sweeeet!...also give the fluted barrel that nice black Oly finish.
My dad and I went on a plant tour of Olympic Arms, @ their Range Day back on Sept 11 '04....we were very impressed!
If you meet Tom S or Skip, tell them hello from me.
Look for SH.net member Tom Spithaler(Rattler)...he's the tall guy in this picture ...
I bet after your tour, you'll want to buy an AR built by the fine people here in the great state of Washington...rather than that BM built in Maine.

I stopped by there today. Nice operation with lots of CNC machines. Most of the guys were headed out the door as we walked around the plant at about 3:00pm, and I got to see some of the "blue" guns they are making as training/parade guns.
Looks like I'll be getting an M4 type carbine with an ultra match barrel pretty soon. Bob said that even with the short barrel lengths I should be able to shoot under an inch at 100yds. Good enough for coyotes for me.
I also liked the Winchester Short Mag uppers. Looks like a real good option for a deer/coyote combo. Maybe something in .243 WSS Mag or 7MM WSS Mag. Time to break out of my .30 cal obsession.

Yeah, building all those training rifles for the Air Force has them hopping!
Cool thing about Olympic Arms, they build all they're own parts, barrels included....unlike the other ABCD AR builders.
Great choise on the Oly Arms AR, you will be pleased...I now own 4 Oly and 2 Mega/Oly AR's and don't think I'm done yet, very addictive!
I can honestly say I have had ZERO problems with any of mine...and some have 5,000-6,000 rds through them.
My dad's Oly is simular to the one you're lookin @ except his has the 16" M4 barrel and he shoots under 2" @ 200 yards!
