summer glory
      #250708 - 06/24/06 10:55 PM

i took a day today to scout some summer run steelhead. i was not disappointed, i hooked around 10 or so and ended up landing 3. i forgot how ballistic these fish can be. i was fishing head of tide and had it all to myself, i was using the spot and stalk method, these tidewater steelhead are so agressive. everytime i saw a fish or a pod of fish, i would get a bite, i was using sand shrimp tails with a real small piece of lead, i missed one and was reeling up and it took a swing at my bait again then turned around and smashed it, i love these early summer runs with a passion, i remember why they are my favorite fish, i'm gonna take a camera tomorrow, hopefully i will get some pics to share.

2 weeks bro, and we are after 'em hard.

I broke my fly rod today on a behemoth carp, so hopefully I'll have it replaced by then. If not, I have some (12+) gear rods . Gonna be a fishing/clamming/crabbing fest...

Thanks for the report.

nice, i thought you would like that report. these fish are crazy, it's the only place i have ever had luck catching fish when i could see them. oh yeah, at the bottom of the 1/4 mile riffle there is a deep slow hole and i broke a big springer off down there on my bobber too, dang 30 lb p-line, they don't make it like they used to.

Bait? BAIT?? You don't need no stinkin BAIT!! Posh, post back after you pull out your fly rod.
:>)

(Couldn't resist ...) What river are you fishing? Very few summer runs up here on the top end of the Rogue so far. Ditto the spring kings at 10,000'ish. But the season is very young for both.

well yesterday i forgot my camera and today i just left it cause i wore shorts, it was hot. i will bring it tomorrow, that one salmon bite had me all sprung on salmon again so i have only been steelheading a little. i killed one summer yesterday so we could bbq it and lost a second, today i got down there and spotted a couple and got one to go my first cast. it went in one run about to the bottom of my spool and shot through some brush and took my leader. i saw one more and missed but burned it pretty good so it wouldn't bite again, then i went salmon fishing with no bites. i will remember tomorrow and i am back saying forget the salmon, i'm steelheading.
fred, i bet you could get them on a fly, if you want to know the river pm me.

well, i was lame today, i slept in and let my buddy capitolize on me not being present. by the time i got there he had landed two and lost three, he said there was a bunch of fish but they quit biting. he went home and i started fishing, i got down there and got one to go about 5 minutes in to the day, i lost that one on the second jump and it was a stud, oh well. i walked down to the bottom and spotted a school of about a dozen coming up, i went into stealth mode and slowly followed them up hoping they would stop at the riffle, sure enough they did. i made my first cast with confidence that things were gonna happen, sure enough my rod started pumping, i set hook and missed it some how, i ran back and grabbed another bait, the next cast i connected, it went screaming down river jumping and going ballistic, in mid air the hook started back my way, another statistic. those fish left and i started looking again, i didn't see any fish so i just started casting, about my third cast i felt a tick and then saw a fish thrashing in front of me, i reeled down till i felt weight and set hook, another rocket. this thing was out of control, it would not stay in the water, there were a couple close calls with brush but i managed to land it, it was about a 10 lb summer run, a pig. after that the tide came in and it was over down there, i went up the river and hooked 4 salmon and landed one bronze hen, both fish are still swimming, i will be back at it in the am.

light drift gear, i carry shrimp, boraxed eggs and crawdaddy tails, it usually doesn't get past the first bait, whatever i choose first. it's kind of neat, i just stumbled on that fishery a few years ago after a hard night of partying, i wanted to fish at noon when i woke up but i didn't want to be around any people. i knew of the spot so i went and tried it, within an hour and a half i hooked 11 and landed 6 of them, i was pretty excited. since then it is my favorite low water steelheading spot. i walk from top to bottom and spot fish, if they are moving, you follow them until they stop, i have found they will not bite and will even spook if you cast at moving fish, i have came to the conclusion that fish move because they have somewhere to go and are not comfortable where they are, when they stop it shows a level of comfort, fish have to be comfortable to bite. salmon often swim by but i have only got one to go and it was about eight pounds, they just are not comfortable in that shallow water. i have got them on bobbers as well as spinners and spoons also but nothing beats a drift bite, especially with tiny leads. i'm using eight lb test right now, i usually use four but the fish are running large and i'm losing them even on eight. i'm using my 9 1/2 foot 4-8 lami cert pro and it is the perfect rod to match the method.

you are right Mike re: movers not being big biters in shallow water, but if they are holding in a pool, it's game on
