I have a pair of bushnell's 8x32, trophy model. Not to expensive 150ish and have worked great. Most guys will tell you Leica, Swaro's, Steiner...if you have 600 - 1200 dollars for 'bino's, go for it. I personally have never needed em for the low light conditions that prove their worth...most times it's beyond shooting hours by the time i would have needed em. As far as a scope, get a leupold..lifetime warranty and great optics....made in Oregon I believe. I've had a varix2 for over ten years and it still performs like the day I bought it. Guy on another board was selling a 3x9x40 Leupold for 150 shipped. Let me know if your interested in that one and i'll jingle up the guy.

got a burris fullfield 3-9 i could prolly part with. used this scope for many years and took plenty of critters with it.i'd say the vari-x 2 (now called vx-2) is slightly brighter. burris is known to build rugged optics and i can tell you this thing has seen its share of "rugged" use and held it's zero year in, and year out. never fogged. but like musicman said, leupold cant be beat. got a pair of wind river (leupold's overseas manufacturer) 8x32 roof prism's that have showed me more game than i can tell you. good glass. not the best or as glamorous as some, but a hunter's tool that can be relied on. never fog, and have held up in every weather condition imaginable. the porro-prism models are pretty good too. i would reccomend wind river to a beginner hunter. or any hunter for that matter. not sure i want to sell mine but maybe i could let them go to the right guy.

I have a 4x12 leupold and rarely take it over 4 or 6, I don't know if it makes a difference in accuracy by why chance it? I just put the crosshairs where they're supposed to go at 4x and lettrr rip. Good luck, both scopes are sold.

binos- pentax SP 8x43's are about $409 online. They are really really good. Like swarovski good. Read some online reviews.

Scope- Leupold vx1 3-9x40 or 2-7x33. Or a used varixII. They are good optically, and VERY good dependability wise. Save the extra money and spend it on the binos!

Lots of folks like the higher variables. I dont. Most of them have an adjustable objective, you dont want that gizmo on a hunting rifle. Just one more thing to have out of adjustment at the wrong time. Most varibles over 9 power have it. Keep it simple. I would recommend a fixed power leupold, but they they are more expensive than the vx1 variables.

I use a 2-7x33 on my elk rifle. I am sending it in to leupold to have an elevation turret added for longe range stuff. Elk are big and there isnt a lot of advantage to going higher than 4 or 6 power even for the long pokes...

I have a 3 x 9 Leupold and its the shizzznit. I never have used it over 6 or 7X and I think if you go with a 4 X 12 you should do so only if you plan on long range shots (think 700 + yards). Most of my kills have been 200 yds or less, except for one muley @ 500 yds.

Right on, Marine!

Back when I was in, we used to shoot "possibles" (that's ten in the bull!) at 500 yards, slow fire, prone, with our ol' M-1 "bullet launchers", and THAT was with simple iron sights! And NO "glass" to help us!

How big was the bull you got all the shots in?

20" bull, 10" V-ring. For the most part, shots were all in the V-ring. Only in extreme cross winds would a shot or two wander out of the V-ring.

And that was not just me - most of the troops could do as well.

Scope: 3X9 is plenty for any hunting you will be doing Burris or Leupold, I have a Leupold my father in law had when he was a kid, and it still works great. It seems as clear as a new one I have, and I have a couple of Burris and they seem comparable.

BINOS: Go with a buddy willing to shell out 1000 for a good pair, and look through his.

Bob- those are great weapons for war and hunting too, as are the m16-A2's I used. MP5s are fun CQB weapons too.

240 on my last qual day(KD 500 range) in a 15+ mph crosswind = no fun, but still 240 ain't bad. I lost most of my points in the kneeling- DAMN WIND!

(250 possible to those not in the know)

thanks Bob

earlier in the week I managed a 248, so I had my hopes up for similar or better, but that damned wind made it impossible to hit 10s from the kneeling stance
