So I was down at the port of Olympia on my lunch break checking out the big ship in port getting loaded up with gear for Iraq and noticed down off the public dock a commotion between two seagulls.
I walked down and was within about 50 feet of a male seagull on top of a female with her neck in his mouth trying to drown her. By the time I left, the female was most likely within a few minutes of death as she was not putting up much of a fight and seemed to be fully exhausted. It went on for about 15 minutes as the male kept biting and trying to get on top of and put under the water which he succeded in doing several times for several seconds. Anyone ever heard of this or seen similar?

I believe that is typicla mating behavior for seagulls. Not quite as romantic as dinner and a movie...

The jury is still out...The Oly Audubon only returned my call to confirm that I had actually called and that an expert would call me.

couldn't we replace the seagulls with Babs to this:
seagulls, killing babs aren't we the luckiest people in the world?

I have seen ducks making violent love as well. Maybe we need a domestic violence hot line for Avians.

Ahh to be as old and crusty as you fellas ...Here I thought I was witnessing something truly epic, maybe even animal planet worthy, and only to find out that Jonathan livingston seagull was doing the hmm-haa with his lady friend. Nature is a weird bird. Thanks for all the insight!
