Fish On! new
      #252306 - 07/08/06 09:48 PM

Managed to make it back out of Winchester Saturday morning. I caught 13 by 1:00 p.m. 3 were Coho the others were Chinook. I kept 2 Chinook and released all others, the largest was just shy of 41 lbs. the other was right at 20 lbs.

365, I fish nothing but plug cut in the ocean. today everything was caught between 25' and 45' down on green label with a reverse cut.

Marty, that's an affirmative. 365 thanks for the compliments. it's going to be a little over a week before I'm able to get back on the water, then I'm going to hit it hard for about 10 days straight. pictures and reports to follow.

Interesting (and what I remember about open ocean fishing .. sigh)didn't think a cut plug rolling one way vs. the other would make any difference. Obviously a wrong assumption.

Where are these fish? Where is Winchester? I tried to book a charter for Coho out of Depoe Bay this weekend but they wouldn't take me because the fishing has been slow. Had go bottom fishing instead, which is fun, but was hoping to see a little more chrome. Limited on rockfish but no lings to speak of. Crabbing was good as well (2 days, 20 keepers). So where am I supposed to go to get my chinook or coho for the summer???

Winchester Bay, see Rick Mason at Salmon Harbor Charters. they have been knocking them dead the last few days, many large fish on the surface. Coho season is over july 31, or whenever quota is met.

jake, who did you book through? it sounds like they did good yesterday, they probably wouldn't book coho trips because the skippers will only take 16 people for coho and about 20 for bottom fishing, they wanted to make money on the busy weekend. i wouldn't even think of coho fishing though with a fishery going on like winchester bay, it looks like some pretty quality chinook fishing right now.

That there is some fatties! Nice pic.

We always called the reverse cut a "wheeler cut" and it works great at the Buoy ten fishery. Don't have a clue where the name came from.

I booked through Tradewinds there in Depoe Bay. I've used them several times and have usually enjoyed it. Wish I had my own boat though. Why is the Salmon fishing so great down there and slower further north? What is August like at Winchester? I have one more summer vacation/long weekend to plan and it will be in August. Reccomendations? Anyone know of any great camping sites near Winchester?

tons of camping near there jake, either tent sites or truck/rv sites abound near winchester bay

August should be a coho blitz

the whole coast will be good for coho in august, the only problem is it won't be open, they have a lame ocean coho season, it starts when there are no fish and ends when the fishing picks up and the fish are larger. it's like harvesting your crop a month early.

if you book a trip out of tradewinds again, request the tacklebuster, i have worked on every boat in the harbor and he is the hardest working, most professional skipper in the bay. he also has the nicest and most well taken care of, fast boat.

Jake, fishing in August at Winchester is hot, generally by the middle of September most of the fish have entered the rivers. camping is not a problem, there are about 5 campgrounds right in Winchester and 3 state parks within 15 miles, or you can camp right in the dunes within 100' of the road for free.

What is the Coho Season end date? How about Chinook? When is the best time for one of the big boys?

Coho season ends July 31st or whenever quota is met. best time for one of the big boys in the ocean is between now and the first part of September. I have 3 over 35 lbs. and 1 over 40 lbs. already and the season is just starting to take off. looks to be a good year by the early signs.

Made it back out the 19th after 3 days of rough ocean conditions. the water temp has fallen almost 8 degrees causing the fish to scatter. still managed to catch and release 5 Chinook, nothing of any size, they were averaging 15 - 20 lbs. I'm going to be at Winchester for the next 10 days straight. report and pictures to follow.

365, I saw the coastal forecast. looks like a lot of half day trips this week, ocean swell is manageable and usually don't get much wind wave here until late am or early pm. My brother and family are coming in from out of state so we are going to try to get some fishing in and do a little partying.

sounds like a ball, they have forecasted 20-25kts of wind the last three days and it hasn't happened, hopefully the trend continues. i guess blanco south is the real terror, it blows about 300 days a year around there. good luck, hope to see some toads, i will be chasing summers first of the week.
