BC - Keep your self rightous comments for the other old ladies on Bcfishingreports forum. Did I say how I caught these fish??? Did you see me flossing fish??? No on both accounts.
I'll see to it that these types of comments don't poison this board the way people like yourself have done up there.

Flossing.... dare I explain it. Flossing is using long leaders up to 15' or longer to line fish. In other words, you cast out and the line runs through the fish's mouth until the hook get's caught in the side of, you feel the weight, set the hook and fish on. Let me also say, that it is not illegal to do so, and 95% or more people fish for sockeye with this method. First of all let me explain what was behind by retaliation to BCSteel's comment. As of late, there's been a LOT of debate back and forth on a couple of BC fishing forums (BCFishingreports & Screamingreels) in regards to flossing or snagging as they like to call it. FYI They call bottom bouncing snagging too. EVERY TIME some unsuspecting soul will post a couple pics, along with a story of the days fishing, then come the critics, and so it begins. It's like Some can't face the facts that the Fraser sockeye IS a meat fishery. I say, if you don't like it, change it. You are allowed two fish per day on a run of fish that this year is estimated up to 14 million. To date, I've brought one sockeye home. There was one dude that caught what I call a tweener (not to bright, not to dark) king on the Vedder. He posted a couple pics and a story, then the ladies of the quilting bee start in how he sangged it and one went so far as to say he caught it on it's redd. Give me a friggin break. I will say, that they do make a point, because there's more and more flossers using this technique on the Vedder, which is more of your typical river. The Fraser is a BIG river with water clairity from 4" to 12" at best. Now for the answer. Have I flossed for sockeye in the past...... yes. Do I do it everytime I fish....NO. I try to find alternate methods to target them. There you have it.

Let me also add, that I like seeing fish pics and hearing the story that goes along with it. But there are some, that are just looking to start trouble, and that ruins it for everyone. Why on earth would anyone in their right mind post pics. They might as well paint a bullseye on their forehead. Hence my hostility. The flossing controversy is a hot topic up north. Part of me thinks that just because 95% of the people fishing that way, doesn't necessarily make it right.

Good on ya Hog!
I have fished the Vedder and have seen some straight up rapeing of the resource! Education is what will fix this problem, not self rightous diarrhea of the fingers via a flamming post from the holey roller elitist's!

Let me be the first to stand up and say - Hello My name is QwikSticks and on the fraser I am a flosser. I love hearing those that have not done it bitch about it. Flossing on the Fraser is harder than one would think. Throwing a 3 to 4 oz weight all day is not easy and throwing it out in the river does not guarantee success. I have seen a lot of people get skunked up there or get frustrated with this flossing technique. The skill in flossing is almost entirely knoiwing where to anchor or stand and to some extent how to mend your line and feel for the floss.
This is a fun meat fishery all about the party on the gravel bars at night, half heartedly fishing all day and just enjoying the Fraser. when the Fraser Fever hits you just have to go.
ain't that right Coho.

The hog doesn't like anything bigger than 3oz. I wear a back brace and it does wonders. Lately, I've dropped down to 2 oz, along with a supersecret line set-up and my hook-up ratio has improved.... a little. I definitely agree that flossing is no picnic. I've only brought home two, but I'm in it for the fun, not the meat. My uncle went up this morning early and had 3 springs on and landed one. limit of sockeye by 8:00

Granted QS, flossing may not be easy....but's it's easier than catching em by having the fish bite....even still easier than letting a fish go that's been snagged outside the mouth. With that, 14million fish? you kiddin me, these can't be wild fish, floss away..bonk the hatchery infidels!!!! Wish I could have made it up this year Mark! Keep me open for later and other species...peace my bro'!

They're ALL wild Musicman. NO hatchery sockeye on the Fraser. With that said... I was up there a week and a half ago and flossed my share. Got a couple of springs (chinook) too. My favorite part of that fishery is finding a secluded island in the middle of the river and camping for a couple of days. Good stuff!

I have tried lost of alternative methods to flossing with limited success. And by limited, I DON'T mean I caught my limit. I have been know to floss when I have my kids in the boat, mainly because they don't comprehend the whole catch & release concept and they like to reel em in. Sockeye just tastes so dang good BBQ'd. And quite frankly I can't tell the difference in taste between a flossed fish and one that bit . The two fish I've kept this year probly isn't going to have much of an impact on the run that will return year from now. Now the nets....... that's another story!!! A wilderness experience it isn't
MM I got a special place in mind for later this year.

musicman, sockeyes are not biters. they are a planckton eater. maybe if you want tie up a micro fly, give it a try. but chances are flossing is the preferred way of taking sockeyes. i personally have never caught one.

Some can't face the facts that the Fraser sockeye IS a meat fishery.
I've only brought home two, but I'm in it for the fun, not the meat.
So whats it going to be? Snagging for meat or snagging for fun? Now your telling us that snagging for springs ok too - and those are most definatly biting fish.
No amount of your poor justifications will make snagging fish for fun and acceptable way to catch fish. Just because there is a loop hole for lazy people to use to keep snagged fish doesnt make it right to exploit it.
Do you want me to come down to your OP rivers and start whacking wild steel this winter - just because its legal - or should I contine to release them - because its the right thing to do.
Do you floss (snag) fish on your home rivers as well? Snagging here is snagging there as the intent is the same in both cases.
And yes, I used to be a snagger as well not too long ago but the realization that just because everyone else is snagging fish and calling it fun, still doesnt make it right.

sportsmen dont snag eh
they dont serve 2 minutes in the penalty box for hooking either
flossin, bait, fly--goal hook fish legally (single BARBLESS) -keep no more than your limit. 15mill fish. get your fish and go floss sturgies
snaggin--lead barbs trebles--PENALTY BOX--very very bad

I didn't think they did but after fishing the Lk Washington sockeye this year for the first time, we caught most our fish in the mouth. What possessed them to bite it, I don't know but it was apparent they did.

The Fraser "flossery" is a WHOLE different ballgame than Lake WA Music. Vis in the river is about 1 foot on a good day and the best places to "hook" fish are seams out in front of long gravel bars in walking-speed water that's about 8 to 10 feet deep. That's why long leader flossing works well.
I think Lake WA may be a unique fishery in that I don't know of any others where the transition from salt to a freshwater lake is so short. Usually the fish have to travel many miles upstream to reach their home lake. I think that's why those Lake WA fish are still biters. Fraser sockeye are bound for lakes and tributaries hundreds of miles from the salt and the area where this fishery occurs is about 60 to 90 miles upstream from the mouth.

Actually, people who are "flossing" (snagging) on the Fraser are not even trying to find biters. 8'+ leaders in very limited visibility with tiny atractors in moderate to fast current are not designed to take biting fish. Although there is probably a small fraction of a percent that do bite, far and away the vast majority are snagged in the mouth area. I envy the Lake WA fishery where biting sockeye are the target.

Your snaggers must be really good if they can snag using this type of equipment in that type of water. With all the slack in the line and the tiny gear, that's pretty amazing. Sure hope our American Natives never learn this trick.
