On A giudes website I read that he puts a strip of hering on his coyotes. Does anyone else do this? It seems to me that it would effect the action.
Shaun.

I've seen folks put them on the front hook of a squid behind a flasher. I suppose if he were fishin the Yotes behind a flasher he's not that worried about killin the spoons action. I bet it's not that big of a strip of herring. Filleted & cured in Rock Salt to toughen it up. Maybe 1" square or smaller.
He's lookin for that icing on the cake...tryin to get a fish that might otherwise just investigate to bite!

Ok bite & hold. The herring provides something chewy as well. Those extra seconds of that fish holding something in its mouth might equal enough time for you to get the rod out of the holder & set the hook. Smelly Jelly is just scent no texture.
Lets say your walking down the street & the wonderful aroma of a steak grilling hits your nose...what do you do...you figure out where the heck that smell is coming from. If your hungry maybe you go check it out...go in side...check out the menu...order something. The whole reason your staying is cause you want to taste & chew that steak! If your hungry just smelling it isn't the same as tasting & chewing!
I would be interested to hear from any folks who have run a test on this. Two rods, same setup and one with a herring strip & one with Smelly Jelly. Tracking the bite/hookup ratio and the hookup/landing ratio.

Bite and hold maybe if it isn't behind a flasher. Behind a flasher it's bite and hooked.

Maybe a very thin small herring strip on the hook would work...anything else the spoons action would be deadened. Worth a try.

It would be interesting to see the side by side test. Ill just stick with what works for me. But...if anyone wants to take me out to perform the test, ill supply the herring strips

Personally I just soak down my flashers/dodgers, leader and spoon with scent oils. Herring usually but sardine and anchovy also on a whim. Everytime you bring your gear up and reset just freshen up the scent.

Even the smallest piece of seaweed throws the action off... Inquirying minds want to know too.
The only two spoons that were devised to be fished with or without bait in the Northwest were the Point Defiance spoon (most current)(retired the stamp in 2006) and the Spoon Plug (circa 1948). If you see them, grab them while you can. They are now consider collector's items and no longer made.

Strips will kill the action. The action is what makes the coyote work so well, as others have said add gel stink and that's all you will need.
