Anyone here ever build their own? Hootchies in various known killer patterns, glow bead in the head, twinkle skirt behind that inside the hootchie...all threaded on barbless mooching leaders. By buying in bulk each of the components you can save a lot of money over time. Personally I've considered threading a piece of foam inside and behind the twinkie skirt for holding scents.     Course you can pay extra to have someone else do this for you.

or you can buy these commercially pre-made. Personally I prefer to make what what has always been available for half the cost.

Gooose, if I were making these, I doubt I would use foam as a scent holder. I thought I taught you that wool roving is superior to synthetic crap for both buoyancy AND scent retention. A soft, loosely formed ball inside the head would be quick and killer.
I'm telling Lydia. You know she prefers natural over artificial products.

I love his named hootchie patterns and the high quality of the product. I'd like to see him incorporate a green or blue metallic hook as the trailers.

I make all my own. I use to use a piece of sponge for holding scent, John uses yarn, which probably works very well by also adding body to the lure, trolling I don't see where it would have any advantage of getting caught up in their teeth like fishing it slow in a river. If they only catch a little yarn on a strike you'll rip the lure right out of their mouth by your speed. I gave up on trying to hold the scent on as it seams to stay on well enough on its own and it's easy enough squirt a little more on after cleaning weeds or releasing a shaker. Saving money isn't the object for me. It's building something yourself and catching a fish with it. Like tying a fly or jig. It also gives you the ability to make differant variations to see if something works better than another.
I'm a hootchy tying and trolling sob, but this season I haven't gotten one fish on one. They've all come on spoons.

Just scrolling thru the patterns John has on his site brought back memories. I like the idea of giving certain patterns the names of popular salmon downrigging spots. I'd like to add to that list down the road for Hood Canal.....Seal Rock, Jap Point, The Slides and Zelatched Point for a start. Donno come this way in October and I'll show you where the Blackmouth are.

I make my own also. Tie my own hook rigs. There is a plastic scoop thing that you can add to the front of the squid which gives even more eratic action. I usually use two twinkle skirts. One fish or even a shaker will trash just one twinkle skirt. I had good luck last winter adding one of those small spinner blades to the line that comes with a prawn spinner rig. Light em up with a camera flash particualrly on dark days
But over the last few years I've alternated more between Coyotes and squids. With two rods I usually have a squid on one and a Coyote on the other. At Ucluelet this summer, the hot item was the big 6.0 Coyote, two tone glow green or Wonderbread. Did well on those behind a Hot Spot.
Also, Johns Sporting goods in Everett has a good monthly newsletter. He had an article in the August issue on leader strength behind a flasher. I usually use 30, sometimes 40 if there are bigger fish around. He claims he has kept records over the years; 20 lots of breakoffs, 25 breakoffs decline some, 30 very few breakoffs, 40 no breakoffs but much less strikes. In his opinion 30 is best.

I also tie all of my own leaders and hooches. John has some good stuff, tied up the B2 and Sekiu Silver Slayer for Sekiu this year. They worked well, espesscially the SSS. The "Sure Set Leader" is nothing new, I have tied that way for years, on mine I use the "Dr T-Ho-Ke' reverse bend on the hook and line my hooks up so the points are ran together, John goes opposite. Sometimes I add twinkle skirts, sometimes not. The bottom line is whatever puts fish in the boat!!

Here is the hootchies i use 
I tie all of mine il like to use 50 or 60 # leader seems to give the hootchie more action. I also like to use Filet o herring with them for scent and more color
I should say color does not matter!! and big fish wont bite hootchies

Of course Goose... I build a lot of them! I started out with onesyes/twoeys and now build over a 1000 a week without lack of quality!
In my almost 35-years of saltwater fishing, I personally don't think there's a lure or bait that can outfish a hoochie. The color combinations, sizes, methods, techniques, and rigging styles are all endless. There's so much one can do with a hoochie that you can't simply do with any other lure/bait.
Barchaser... I am packaging/running 50# Maxima Ultra Green and a very unique tie on my hoochies... and personally tying/running 50# to 80#. This provides the maximum amount of action off the flasher to the hoochie. If you think the diameter is thick, commercial guys usually run 100# - 150# off their flashers. Good Lord, they aren't straving!
I used to run Gammies, but I am now running the Matzuo Octopus Sickle Hooks on the rigs. These things are simply nothing short of outstanding... Sharper, hooking and holding ability, no more brittle barbs!
We nailed a lot of 30# plus fish (Marine Area 11/13) this year testing various hoochies on the 50# leader material... Nookies aren't as shy as everyone claims...
