Waterfowl Season Soon
      #259991 - 09/15/06 11:12 PM

Time to get ready! Hey Pinch you around? I was thinking it would help if we set up a couple blinds ahead of time on both sides of the slough at the Duckabush? Some fence posts and chicken wire as a base for each one. Time to look at more new decoys....I am going to look at modernizing the Honker dekes.

Next tuesday I will have a crew at the farm brushing out the main pond and mowing where the secondary pond is. Also building two new blinds. Any tips on blind construction?

Doc blind construction depends upon a lot of factors. I've installed blinds sunken box blinds in the Elk river salt marshes that you could hunt until the tide rolled over the edges. We installed brass valves that you opened at the end of the day to let the water drain thru and when you showed up for the day you simply closed them. I've built tree fort blinds in those swampy ponds along the Brady Loop Rd. Stake and chickenwire blinds covered in canary reed grass along the flood ponds around Porter. We made a sink floatblind for hunting the bays. I've made shaalow grave pit blinds in barley and corn ...fricken cold laying on your back in those! E-mail me some pics of where you want the blinds or what you are hunting and I can make suggestions. Or hey the wife and I can take a road trip and meet ya at the site?

What choke do you guys use for duckies, I picked up a Winnie 12g with interchangeable chokes, steel shot also is only permitted, correct. or that other funky metal biz-somethin other.....

Improved cylinder is my choice after shooting steel 20 years. There are several other shots allowed but they are to expensive for my tastes. Go with 1 1/8th 2/34 inch steel #2 shot at 1450 fps for hunting over decoys.

I also use improved cylinder with 1450 fps #2 or #3 steel for duck hunting. I use the same choke with 1 oz. lead loads for crows. Bill

Yep, improved cylinder is it.

Pretty pumped for duck season this year. I do best on dry years in that it keeps the ducks in the public areas I like to hunt, and out in the estuaries (also public). The lower Chehalis valley has pretty much ran out of public hunting areas (there are three notable ones left). Those are way too competitive for fun hunting anymore.

My house overlooks the Chehalis river and I have been waking up to about 3 flocks of local mallards quacking their way by at daylight headed upriver, I never see them going back down in the evenings so they must move earlier than I get home from work. At about 10 am 2 flocks of geese go right over my house. Like clockwork, the second flock is always well within gun range. I don't plan on doing anything about it, but it is fun to imagine bringing a couple down.

I'd like to get out this year too. My lab keeps giving me dirty looks when he sees ducks; haven't hunted quackers or honkers since I left OK back in 2001. I think he's trying to tell me something. I've got about 6 bags of duck dekes and 5 doz or so honker and snow dekes. Just need to find access.
I agree with the open choke over dekes with steel shot (3" #2s,) I go to Mod and 3 1/2 BBBs for the big honkers though.
