Washington Fly Fishing set up..... any suggestions? new
      #257476 - 08/24/06 12:39 AM

Hi All,
Great forum here! I've been fly fishing for a long time, but have spent most of my time fishing in Colorado, which is a whole different ballgame!

I've been back in Washington almost 12 years now and have been lucky to get out once a year since then, ( I got married and had kids, I'm sure a lot of you can relate to that!) but I'm working on getting back out on a regular basis. (I need fresh ideas for my Fish Tales strip!)

Anyhow, I'd like to get a new set-up geared toward Washington fly fishing since I'm having to relearn everything from being so rusty, so any and all suggestions for the best Washington fly fishing set-up would be appreciated... Rods (length, weight), reels, line (sinking, floating, weight forward...etc), tippets, flies, or anything else you can think of that would be helpful.

Most of where I'll be fishing is central Cascades, Olympic Penninsula, or anywhere within an hour or so of Tacoma that I can throw a line out for an afternoon. Any suggestions for locations are appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Fishtales,
What species would you be primarily targeting? What size rivers or would you be fishing lakes?

Hi Mojo, trout and steelhead, mostly. As for rivers, I'll probably start with ones that I know like the Skykomish, Snohomish, Green River, unless someone has better suggestions that would be more productive. I would probably fish lakes too in the Cascades. I'm very much open to suggestions from you guys who know the local waters better than me. Thanks!

I'd go with an 8wt setup for an all around setup. I prefer rods in the 9-9'6" range. You'll be a bit overgunned for trout, but perfect for steelhead. Unless you can find a Sage RPL 7100. Great all around rod, and one of my prefered summerrun/light winterrun rod. But no one rod will cover all the aspects. For trout, I like using a 5-6wt. When you hit salmon, depending on the salmon, I run anything from a 7wt up to a 10wt.

Onto lines, I'd either have a type III sinktip and a floater on seperate spools. Or if you can afford it, buy a multitip flyline. With everything from a floater to a super fast sinktip (which for winterruns, you want the fly down fast and deep)

Thanks Steelheader69. I appreciate the information! I currently have a 5wt. that I've used the last 15 years or so that's getting pretty beat up, but it's still serviceable. I do need to get some new line for it though.

I need to catch up on some reading and learn more about the various lines, something I never learned too much about in the first place.

BTW, you tie a mean looking fly! Beautiful work on your website!

I agree with Jerry. Since you have a 5 wt, buy a 9 foot or 9'6" 8 wt.

Look hard at the Temple Fork Outfitters TiCrX series rods. $225.00 is pretty reasonable for a good quality rod. I have 2 (5wt and a 8wt) and they kick butt. I broke my 8wt on a large carp (I horsed it) and had a replacement on my doorstep in 3 days. They were really great on the phone, and didn't give me any grief.

I'm a Ross reels guy. I like them. Drag is really important on a salmon - steelhead reel. Not as much (as you know) on a trout rod.

Think RIO lines. Rio Grande for trout, and multi-tip for salmon/steelies.

There is my .02!

Not a problem. Yes, I agree with Mojo, those TFO's are pretty nice, and have found a following.

I like the Rio lines myself. Most of my rods have them on them, except a couple cortland multitips I was given.

He's back, but apparently, some things have changed around here.
Jerry hitched, Wango hitched, Grizz moved, RL moved...

Been a few ch-ch-changes here too. A couple involuntary job changes, some involuntary weight loss, an involuntary loss of some rod-building equipement, a dramatic change in my financial picture...

It was all just a dream while I was in the shower...

Thanks for welcoming me back. With the wedding (which went extremely well) and the move, things have been up in the air. Just moved into our new house (well, it's an older brick house, but new to us) on some acreage in a little rural town. So now I'm back and settled in. Until recently, I was going non stop 24/7 every day of the week trying to get things squared away in the old house and then getting stuff ready for the new. But I'll be back to posting more now.

Have we met Goose, or are you thinking about a different Geoff? Either way, pleasure to meet you. : )

Fishtales, Gooose is talking about Workin4fishin. He's a Geoff as well (didn't know you were one as well). So wasn't talking to you.

GADZOOKS! I 'go away' for a few days .. and Jerry's Back! Too cool! Welcome back Boss.

In your 'price point' another very good series of rods to consider are the "Beulah" rods. As they're centered out of Medford, Oregon repairs, etc., would be a 'piece of cake.' Good people (I know several of them), very well finished product (they skip all that bloody gold paint!), very good casting equipment.

When you deside to put aside the 'boy-toys' join us in the spey section and we'll talk about "manly-men" fly rods.

Fishtales . I have a couple of rods that might fit the bill for you as well , you can check them out on my website , the link is at the top of the page ..Wyld Edge Outfitters .. I have a 3-4wt and a 7-8wt , they are multipeice rods so if you wanted to do a little traveling to they are great for that . Ditto on the Rio lines and the Ross reels , good stuff , decent prices .

Well if you are looking for steelhead, i'd suggest the same rod I use if you are on a budget. Lamiglas tr909 9wt 9ft. It's about $90-$135, I forget exactly. It's a 4 piece rod and has a fast action. They also make tr908/tr907 which are 8wt and 7wt. Folds down to 2' 4" so you can stick it in your trunk and take it out after work. Real nice rod for the price.
