Western Washington...Weyerhauser should open their lands by hunting season though this dryness may hinder that. Capitol Forest between Olympia and Elma is open. Lots of land open around the Ellensburg/Yakima area in Eastern Washington. That should getcha started.

The DNR has a map showing public lands in the state. Shoud be all the info you need to get one on their website.

Get a Washington Atlas and Gazetteer. Look at the eastern parts of Skagit, Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties. You will find thousands of roads. The roads labeled FS ## are Forest Service roads. This method also works for other counties.
It's already October. A little late to be in this stage of scouting.

The map is NOT on the website, you should be able to find out where to get one there. Might check WA state parks site too.

Cupo is right one, those maps are awesome...lots of space to hunt up there...down here too, but the drive can be a bear.

DNR provides paper Quad maps that shows the relative location of public lands. They may be downloadable now. I'll check. Ditto on Cupos advice....also you can usually get maps from big timber companies that are useful.

The Public Lands Quadrangle maps and the state forest ones work fairly well.

The Major Public Lands map is the one I have. It's fairly large and shows the whole state. The ones Goose is talking about cover a smaller area but with a lot more detail.

Whether it is big game hunting or fishing, or pursuits such as waterfowl, berries and mushrooms, grouse, pigeons, clamming or just knowing what back country lands and roads it helps to have as thorough a selection maps possible. From maps such as the one for Major public lands to the ones you can get a the county assessors office they all help in your endeavours. Nearly all counties now offer interactive map tools online for free that will show you who owns what. For the uplands they are pretty damn accurate. For tidelands they have some issues across the board. Use any of the tideland info you glean from these mapping tools with a large grain of salt.

BTW, one of the timber companies down this way have areas that they feed the bears, at least they used to....way of gettem off the trees and making them available to hunters....been a long time for me, used to be that way though...good luck.

I second the Atlas and Gazetteer. My original one is ragged, and well used.
