Usually under conifers( fir and pine) with salal and evergreen huckleberries. Look for mossy old skidder roads that have grown over.

Finally found some white chantrelles this afternoon.

Matsus occur in selected habitats and yes they are typically higher elevation. But exceptions do happen. I get a handful every year several 100 feet from my back door at an elevation of 340 feet. Doug Fir, salal, evergreen huckleberries and moss. The other spot is less than 200 feet and is amongst some mixed conifers including fir and pine, salal, huckleberry that was selective logged a decade ago. We find Matsus in or along the old skidder roads. Best way to discover them is to just simply get out and explore.
