to clean a duck or pheasant, due to my past two years if duck hunting (never pheasant hunted before) i used to only get 1-2 a season due to school and work so i would usually just breast them out. but this year it is looking like i am going to have some more time on my hands and would like to try and process the whole brid, i know you don't wanna puncture the skin so i was curious as to the best way to go about this? thanks

by hand taking the feathers and down off with the way they naturally lay or buy a plucker from Cabelas...mine runs with a drill...I would imagine they still make those. Then buy a rotisserie or one of those chicken roasters...yummm.

Pluck the birds as Doc pointed out then cut off feet and wings. Finish plucking as much as you can. Holding bird by the head dip body in melted parfin wax and toss in bucket of cold water. Do this to all of your bird. Then peel off the wax and off will come all the remaining feathers, down and pin feathers.....resulting in a nice perfectly clean skin. Then cut off the heads and tail stubs. Holding the bird breast down slide a sharp butcher knife into the body cavity from the tail end with the blade up. Rip them open down the backbone and clean out the innards. Wash inside and out and you now have the birds ready for roasting.

Hate the taste of singed feathers...waxed gives a nicer product at a bit more expense and time.

That's alot of work if you have 148 mallards to process in one afternoon. Or 56 Greenwing teal. Jim I really need to hook up with you and son on one of my shoot and stack trips. Early in the season you get a lot of young birds or those that are not fully fledged. Pin feather city! Burning pin feahers doesn't work to well...thats why we wax them.

what about cutting into the bowel? if i run a knife into it and cut the organs wont that taint the meat? just currious thanks for all teh advice thought helps alot

not really just after you get them plucked at the anus the skin is verry thin just lightly cut it and use your fingers to open it up and slide out the inerds. hell if you dont like the gress just skin the bird and smoke it it bakes up great that way to no plucking. Jim W

so to do that just split it up the belly and work itout and the skin and feathers pull away like on grouse? that woud be the best way for me prolly i just don't want to continue to breast them out and try a few different recepies is all?

Split the birds up the back...use a super sharp butcher knife and you won't get any added contamination of the meat. Think about it? You blasted the bird with bird shot and typically the shot goes thru the innards. Just wash the processed birds well.

Goose- How much wax are we talking about having to melt? Are you talking about the parafin that comes in little 1 lb boxes? Thanks, Matt

Netboy: Yes he is talking about the 1lb boxes. Be carefull to not get the wax to hot as it will catch fire. We used to do this all the time in boyscouts works great. Of course I'd use a pan that you don't mind trashing cause that melted wax is a pain to get off of the pan.

I have a special pot set aside...one that will hold about 4 blocks of 1 pd of parafin. I melt these by putting the parafin pan in a larger pot of water. Singeing does not get rid of pin feathers...neither does any other method. Opening couple weeks of the season in places like Grays Harbor all of your Pintails are gonna be freshly molted birds. Those birds and quite a few Mallerds are gonna be loaded with pin feathers.

A better way is to just put some water in a very large pot, and float the paraffin on it. It will melt as the water heats up, and float on the water.
Then it's easier to just push the duck through the paraffin layer, and as you pull it back out, a moderate coating of paraffin will stick to the bird.
Then it's an easy job to peel off.
