Well we had about an hour and a half to hunt before we had to start picking berries on Saturday morning, but we only needed about 40 minutes.
It was a little to foggy to shoot at 6:55 like the book said so we just watched birds come in and out of the dekes until about 7:20. That got the dog a little excited and he broke out and chased a few flocks out (bad dog!). Once we could tell what type of ducks we were shooting we started off by warming up the barrels and missing a few flocks of teal. Then the widgeon started coming through and we put down 12 of them, plus a teal and unfortunately a pintail. She came out of the dekes as we were shooting at widgeon with their landing gear out and took a stray bb.
I do have to give it up for Bailey (the dog) after the first light jitters and whining he calmed down and made some really good retrieves. We lost no cripples, he made 2 retrieves that were well over a hundred yards of swimming out and back. Compile that with the fact that we were shooting ducks over his head while he was making these retrieves, his concentration was pretty good.
At 8 am we started packing the dekes up. That was an opener like I remember them.

It was my first opener since the 90's. I usually am fishing this time of the year. The tide happened to line up with first light so we just decided to see if anything was flying. It is funny how when you really don't put a lot of thought into something it just turns out to be one of those days.
I bet if we go back next weekend get there really early, set up a blind, put out more dekes, and get more prepared we won't get anything.
For this trip we just sat on the ground with 8 mixed duck decoys, 4 floater geese and a few standing on the beach.
