Open the chamber, both to make sure it isn't loaded, and because the barrel comes out better that way.

Then, take the end cap off the magazine tube first. Next, pull the barrel off. Then, take the forend off. A light cleaning of all parts with either some solvent of just gun oil is fine. I personally prefer silicone spray for most purposes. Don't leave excess on it. Excess lubricant will only attract dust/dirt. NOTE: I haven't taken an 870 a part in quite a while, but I believe that is accurate. You could take the trigger out, but I don't think that is necessary unless the gun is really dirty. You tap the pins out from the recessed side of the pin to take them out. Don't use anything sharp in the recess. A brass punch is ideal, but a dull nail can also work.

Oh, you might want to check to make sure the plug is installed. You can do that by counting how many shells will go in the tube. For most hunting, 3 shells is the limit and that includes the one in the chamber. If you aren't hunting with it, then that isn't an issue.

Best advice from a 72 year old with about 65 years of shooting experience - READ THE MANUAL and do what it says!

Most guns are oiled TOO HEAVILY! Just clean the gun, oil it LIGHTLY, and wipe the gun down with a dry cotton rag (a washed old T-shirt)to remove EXCESS oil!

After shooting, clean the bore with a good bore solvent and a brass or bronze brush, and wipe it DRY with shotgun patches!

The gun will outlast YOU if you take good care of it!

Thanks guys. Had the gun out at the trap club Saturday. What fun! I shot 8 clays (out of 25) but that was only my first time. Cleaned it up right nice afterward. Do you clean after each and every use?

If you are shooting steel shot loads take the trigger mechanism out also and clean. Steel shot loads leave behind a lot of partially burnt powder residue.
