Ireland and Atlantic Salmon new
      #264721 - 10/25/06 08:05 PM

Maybe we should get the hint....Ireland's tourism body Failte (Welcome) wants to development salmon angling into a 100-million-euro industry by 2009 involving tourists from Britain, France, Germany and the US. Wish our Govt would come up with aplan like this. It also included TOTAL buybacks and compensation for Irelands feelt of 850 odd Gillnetters. Hmm, Whats wrong with our state???

Brian does Ireland allow public fishing on it's rivers? As I recall they operate under riparian water resource law and you have to purchase your fishing rights by linear feet of river bank. The guys from the flyfishing contingent are more knowledgeable about this and could probably add to this? Basically if applied here in this state it would mean that you would need to own the riparian rights of the section of river you wished to fish. Riparian rights includes the water not just the river bed. You couldn't pull plugs through someones ownership unless you had their permission or purchased a fishing lease from them.

Reality is that except for a few public stretches of waters most of all of the river banks are privately owned and lease out the right to fish from their banks and even the water in front of their banks. Always has been a huge industry...what they are doing is trying to make it better for the industry.

Gee paying gillnetters not to fish? What a concept. The last Columbia Commpact Meeting I was at the gillnetters were saying the same thing.....pay me $100,000.00 and I will quit this year. How do we get it done?

We had a thread on that and I asked how many CR gillnet licenses were out there. Anyone have a number?

So if we bought out a 100 LCR gillnetters we eliminnate what? 5% of the mortality impacts? Results no change in restoration as us sporties will want to fish the fish the the gillnetters no longer fish. Political reality would be that the the Alaskan, BC, Washington coastal and upper CR fisheries would just be able to fish at higher rates. You are tarheting low hanging fruit that has little to do with changing the situation.

Little over 506 times 100k then? That's a piece of change. What does that gain the fish? It may be good for the fish...I am too beat up from fighting Puget Sound and Hood Canal battles to make that estimate so I leave it up to you and others. I will ask though ..Is that where you want to put your money on resolving the larger issues for the CR? from my remote position I believe that the upper river tribal fisheries will just fish more and the fisheries on those fish off our coast and northward will conduct business as usual. Sorry but thats the opinion of a tired bio type.
