Jake,
When fishing across from the chiefs house I usually start with a rod legnth for depth. 9 ft. I don't cast across to the other side. Stay close in and fish the seam.
I don't use jigs too much anymore. Except on the sandy river. But I've caught fish drifting corkies & yarn in front of the shitter.
But what I hear is the run is 2 weeks later than usual this year. If you realy want to get into them take sfc advice and fish closer to the columbia. (the big c )
I fished the mouth last weekend and saw some real trophies landed. I didn't take any home but hooked a few. Gear up if you head down there. The killer Bs are BIG!!!
good luck.

Fished the Deschutes today. The hunt for my first steelhead continues. Saw one guy with a fish, but that is the only one we saw today. We hiked from Mecca Flat along the path down stream for about 2 miles fishing any water that looked good. I did get one nice cut/bow out of the day (3+ lbs range), but that was it. Saw a couple shinook moving up, but it was a slow day for the most part. Good to be out though.

FIshed the Deschutes today. The search for my first steelie continues. I think that it is going to have to come down to being in the right spot at the right time. I tested out my new 9.5 foot spinner rod today. I was bombing spinners clear across the river. Hooked a nice, fat cut/bow (3+ lbs) on a large Meps spinner. Lots of hiking for just one fish though. Fished the "House Hole" with no luck, fished EVERY hole withno luck. We did see some shinook moving up though, whcih was cool. They looked like they were about to fall apart. Nice day on the LD, but still dreaming about steelhead. Thats an update.

Jake
