Nice try Goose, attempting to turn this into a racist thread is pretty pathetic. It has to do with a group(s) getting preferential treatment that is not available to the rest of us. That is unfair and un-American. It is reverse discrimination. I believe Indians have been given way more than that which was taken away from them. Indians were a stone age culture that was defeated by a much more powerful modern culture. Whatever treaties were signed should have had time limits on them.

To continue government subsidies to tribes is an insult to the tribes. It basically says to them "You aren't able to function as a people, so we have to do it for you." It is a massive propagation of inferiority caused by a misguided governing policy.

To me, that is racism.

Sorry, but I don't advocate giving back the land we exchanged for fishing rights in the treaties. I kinda like it here.

You are assuming control would revert back. That isn't the only possibility. We could have had a military conflict instead. NOTE: I'm not advocating anything just stating there were other possibilities if there was a time limit on the treaties.

Ok, I stand corrected. Maybe you cant correct ignorance.

Im getting the impression the people on the other side of this table have not read the Boldt decision. Or any of the fights leading up to or negotiations after. Washington state has been fighting this fight for a long time. The Boldt decision doesnt give the (20)effected tribes new rights. It upholds the rights given in the 1855 treaties. The right to fish in all usual and accustomed areas. The right to half of the fish. It is not a reparation. It is however, a federal court ruling (US v. Washington,1974) forcing Washington state to hold their end of the bargain. Several lawsuits were filed by special interest groups ended with the Supreme court ruling in 1979.

There is alot of good that came out of the ruling, such as Port Ludlow I, the first of its kind treaty between Canada and the U.S. and Washington St./Tribes. And the Northwest Water Resource Council's (NWRC) attempt to overturn phase II of the "Boldt decision", which backfired. All of which has enhanced your fishing through escapement and catch quotas.

History lesson:
In the 1850s the western washington tribes entered into treaties with the United states whereby we relinquished claim to millions of acres of land in exchange for specific rights. Rights kept, not given. As you can imagine, at that time there was an abundance of fish in the treaty area, and the Indians were predominately the only fisherman utilizing the resource. By 1900 the numbers of fish began to decline sharply (due to off-shore netting by non-indians), and Indians attempting to treaty fish were met with "resistance" by a growing number of non-indian fishermen. Washington state simply refused to recognize any treaty right by then. Treaty fishing is one of the last rights we have, not given, kept. The Boldt decision is case law, and the treaties were ratified by congress. Just like every other law we live by, love it or leave it.

Your right Aunty, I think we've beat that horse to death.

Thanks for trying to enlightened the ignorant Ruben.

But as you can tell, the only thing voicing the facts will do is relieve some of the pent up frustrations when dealing with ignorant people. So many don't realize that all the tribes want is for the govt. to uphold their end of the bargain. Lands were traded with the "white" men in exchange for certain rights of use of those lands. Then in usual governmental style, they tried to reneg on their side of the deal, and it took the Supreme Court of the United States to make them follow the treaties that they penned.

Well, let's see.... what was taken away from them? Oh, yeah,..North & South America! So what have they been "given" that's worth way more than that?

The Boldt decision didn't give the tribes any rights, it just said the State couldn't continue to take away the rights reserved to them under the treaties.

That being said, in my opinion Indians in general are no better (or worse) than anyone else regarding their stewardship of their lands & resources, & I do wish they'd be a bit more careful about overharvesting some threatened stocks.

You definately are one of those rednecks that haven't got a clue about Indian culture. You need to get educated dude. Not all Indians (quite proud of that moniker) are card carrying, reparation taking, gill netting slugs as you would like to believe. It's because of people like you that made my greatgrandfather to be ashamed of his heritage. The ridicule, the racism, and the ignorance of people like yourself are the problem. Some of you folks on here should really start researching and learning about the people you put down on this bulletin board, before you start casting stones.

I am one of them "rednecks" ! Whats wrong with being white eh got something against people that differ from you. if redskins are suuuuuch good stewards of the enviroment and just a few are bad then how come they cant even manage there own fish and game with respect on there own reservation!!!! Shiat man pull your head out. we sportsfishermen are out in the the enviroment every day! We see this crap going on first hand every day. Your not talkin to a bunch of seatle coffe junkies here. you dont even want me to start postin pics for proof either. Its a crying shame the crap the indians are getting away with right now that is even against there so called rules but ohhh what a surprise there own fox whatching the henhouse wont even lift a finger. I am pulling my hair out here. the waste and abuse is staggering! More then the general public even has a clue about. I know way more about the dark shiat going on then most sportsfishermen do. Snagging Hah! That aint nothin.

I also know alot more about indian culture then you think dude. The indians of old used what the had because the didnt have anything. The indians of today do this shiat just because they can.

Micro you got any pics of a D8 Cat in the middle of a river diverting it's channel? Livestock wandering back and forth across streams? Private roads being built through streambeds? Stripping of all vegetation from stream banks because it disrupts a view and doesn't look as nice as a lawn? Bulkheads being put in because they are much neater than the natural shoreline and hey the neighbors all have them? Go ahead and post some pics. The list of the travesties and abuses that are happening illegally today is probably to lengthy to be posted in their entirety here but hey I can come up with a few more.

Here's a question for all of you, Indians and Non-indians. Is it the Boldt decision, special treatment, treaties, Tweakers, Meth freaks, snaggers, fishing guides, sports fisherman that has you all in an uproar? Or is it that the fishing isn't as good as it was when all of our grandfathers did it?

When will the day come when we empower ourselves into 1 very large group and fix the fishing problems of Treaty and Non-treay lands?

In my opinion, unless we do something together this is going to go on and one day the Indians are going to fish a season with no fish caught and the sportsman are going to do the same. The fish do not belong to just one group. They belong to all of us and we are all responsible for there exhistance or extinction.......our choice.

Generally I am pst off the fishing isnt as good as what our ancesters had, and really pst off that while more and more fisheries are closed to us to preserve them the tribes continue to rape the hell out of those same fisheries. Together in one big conglomerate? ya like that would ever happen with people like me around. Just look at the wonders it has done for the state to get in bed with the tribes. whohoo chums at hoodsport! what a fricking joke. Oh no but look at all the opportunitty. sheeesh, what a farce.

Damn Micro you haven't ever seen the Weyerhauser and timber industry commercials? Yes they to glamour themselves as stewrds of the resource. Bye bye that issue.

So you can document those activities occurring on the Rez? Well they certainly learned about the technology of Hydraulics code violations from some one. Care to consider how much one is doing that in proportion to the other?

Managing their fish and wildlife resources on the Rez? Hmmm most tribal Rez's on the westside don't by themselves include much in the way of any fish & wildlife habitat. Well shoot the Muckleshoots and such do have some land amongst the Tacoma thru Seattle landscape. Nasty for both fish & wildlife isn't it with what the other side has done .
The Point No Point Treaty Tribes don't have much to screw up as their Rez's are postage stamps or in the case of the Skoks a swampland which had it's natural fish resources destroyed by the City of Tacoma. The Makah and Quinalts have nice large Rez's on the westside and nice fish returns....hmmmm go figure? Oh but their timberlands were logged by nontribals?

Micro you get pissed off by some obviously nasty observations which hey I agree with you about but you are apparently ignoring the more grievous harms our society as a whole have caused and fixated on the harm caused by one segment of that society. Why? Please answer that one question ....why are you so fixated to such a degree on that one segment given the irrefutable facts that the larger society has already killed or resources?

For the fun of it if you want to throw allegations around please pick an individual tribe and some examples of the harm they cause. Oh the Skokomish would be so very easy from your side but be forewarned I know a few things they be doing good for all of us.

I am slightly biased you could say. I just call it as I see it. So Goose, why have the indians been netting the reef outside seabeck cove for the last several months? what are they doing with all the bottom fish there gtting. creation of new fish kill zones? why are there healthy living metridiums in the same footage with all the dead fish pics?

So what does that have to do with the reality that if we hadn't phucked up the system so bad that there could be 2,000 pounds of fish rotting away? I don't give a rats arse if there was 50,000 pounds rotting away in comparison to our impacts that result in millions of pounds not existing. Habitat impacts such as Cushman and all the bulkheading in the Canal far outway a netload of rotting fish. As does the conversion of the Canal in the mid 70's into a nontribal commercial fishery by the state with no regard for tribal or sport fisheries. You claim to know it all...I claim to know what I know as fact that is available on paper.

Micro since you want to use the Canal tribes as an example I have to ask you....Did you participate and contribute to the FERC relicensing process for the Cushamn Dams? Restoring instream flows has been critical to restoring the health of the canal and fish runs. I hope you provided testimony? The Skoks certainly have. Looks like we including the Skoks have won that battle. Did you participate in any way? If you did kudos for you. The Skoks also have bought several parcels of land along several Canal streams to keep them from being developed as us Whiteys tend to do. You know..clear the lot to the rivers edge to get rid of that ugly native vegetation. They have also supported stabilizing stream banks where human caused effects caused increased erosion. Granted they used our tax dollars to do this but ya know at least they are doing somethin...what have you done lately except biatch?

On the other hand the bad side of the tribal fisherie has been pained by myself and friends for their directed harvest upon federally protected summer chums. They really do not need that federal listing anymore but since they are listed myself and several others enjoy being a pain in the butt for several pirate Skoks.

And yes I have particepated and no it didnt do a damn bit of good. Maybe thats why I am so bitter against the canal tribes and of course the suqumish, muckleshoot, and puyallups
