Don't know the story about this animal but it's weird.

never seen anything like it

I think the animal would have become lame in time due to that, or maybe not regardless, it seems like it would be quite a challenge to keep pace with other deer and he certainly couldn't outrun that bullet.

Not weird at all...

Buck to doe ration was to high...to many bucks actually not enough does.

Manicurist was simply to far away.

Shot off a food plot with a diet augmented by protien blocks maybe? Could be a genetic mutation that caused it. Maybe it lived in a nice soft clover field it's whole life. Whtever it's cause, it looks odd for sure...

There was a write-up (with pics) some many years ago in the New York State Conservationist magazine. They explained that the deer lived in a marshy area, and didn't walk on enough rocks and gravel to keep 'em worn down.

I don't know if that was true or not, but it was answered by some conservation dept. expert, (whatever that means).

That is actually a form of hoof founder like horses get.We killed a muley a few years back that had this same affliction and had it checked by a BG bio that had seen this a few times. I can't remember exactly but it had something to do with great feed, fat reserves and injury . they look like some sort of court jester. Not from a marshy area at all just the opposite, scab rock and plenty of does around. This dude was hauling the mail also and was a mature 6 1/2 year old buck.

i find it odd that the thing is not gutted. most deer that are found in a bed off a truck are gutted by that point. something is fishy with this deer. i think it was a domistic deer that was kept in a pen and not cared for. i see this happen with horses. however it does look very healthy. ???

You may have a point Brewer. No entry wound, no exit wound, there isn't a spot of blood anywhere near that deer or on the truck liner. Naturally it's missing a tag also unless it's in the other ear or still with the skinning knife.

There are elk over here with that same affliction, from what I've read, it's a hoof rot that does it. The cow I got last December had elongated hooves that were hollowed out and cracking. Very nasty looking sores on her feet. Here's a link to a WDFW story from last February.

Really good, Tally. The house is up on the flat above the high bluffs. Even if both dams broke that place wouldn't flood. It was there decades before the dams were even built. The 1933 and 1948 floods were much worse.

Yes.

Hyperkeratosis is a thickening of skin tissue, not sure if it has anything to do with the hoof of an animal though. Unless the hard, nail-like tissue is considered skin.

From my experiences with raising sheep, i would say this is foot rot. I had a pregnant ewe last year who had this problem, like how when women are pregnant their fingernails and toenails grow alot, her hooves grew alot, but that wouldn't be hte case with him. Looks like he was pen-raised with minerals and never got trimmed feet or he lived on soft ground all his life.
