First Goose with my son
      #267020 - 11/13/06 11:11 AM Attachment (0 downloads)

Finally too my son & his sister out on his first bird hunt this past Saturday. I haven't gone duck/goose hunting in quite awhile.
Went out to a buddies cornfield in the late afternoon and set up the dekes and waited. Towards the end out shooting hours, a group of 4 geese lands in the field about 250 yards away. We are sitting in a ditch and the ditch runs out about 100 yeards away from where the geese are which would leave us out in the open. So, with about 10 minutes left, I figured we had nothing to lose, so we crept up on the flock. As we get out of the ditch, I see the flock has about 30 birds and not the 4 we saw land.
They all have their heads up and I'm thinking we have no chance. The flock gets up and flys to our rightflying into the wind, but then the miricle happens, they start swinging our way. The flock is going to fly right over us
So I tell my son to get ready. When they are out in front, I tell him to shoot. I hear him shoot and I start blazing. My first shot is a warning shot to the flock, and they take notice My second wobbles a bird and my third folds one up like a cheap tent.
I ask my boy how many times he shot. Turns out, his first shot caught him off balance and rolled him on his back Oh well, he still had a great time.

Yeah, I was too focused on my shooting to see him getting bowled over.
It took a little "pointed" questions to get him to explain what happened. I said "hey, you did a great job, now you know what NOT to do the next time."

That is an awesome story and awesome picture! They won't forget that day.

When my Dad first started taking me all we did was jump shoot because I never had the patience to wait for birds.

I remember how much fun it used to be crawling and sneaking like that. As a kid that was soooo much more fun than waiting over the blocks. I bet your son is super pumped to go hunting again.

I can't wait to take my Daughter along.
