New spey rod definition ?
      #267861 - 11/19/06 10:36 AM

Spey Rod length

So spey rods now start at 11 foot and not the 12 foot length as previously stated by the spey rod gurus, in simons book of just two years ago it states 12 foot as the minimum spey rod length.

Guess I need an 11 footer now ?

Hal, that's one person's general description, NOT a definition.

In fact, some long 2-handed rods exceed the 16-foot length.

Double -handed rod can be any length, so can single-handed rods, the norm for this side of the pond is 15ft for a Double -handed rod and 10ft for a single handed rod.
Years ago you could see rods up to 20ft being used, the big rods now are 18ft (used on the tay mostly).
A rod is after all just a spring and a lever, and most of the private beats on the Spey have manacured lawns, no a blade of Grass out of place.
