Its been 5 years since we met on the old Spey Clave site on Microsoft news site. I remember it was Thanksgiving weekend 2001 which was the last time our HS football team went to the state finals.
All the best ! Some day we will meet physically instead of electronically I hope.

Yeah, and that goes double for me. Not 5 years, but I'd like to share a pool, some conversation, and a good single malt with you, and Hal, too! Yeah, and the Redhead is invited too! (She can wheel us back!)

Sorry fella's, I've had house guests (1 or 2) for the past couple of weeks so getting on line (save for e-mail and a bit of posting) has been 'restricted.' Words out that Washington State rivers are all blown out ... but the Rogue continues gin clear and 8,000 some summer runs buzzing around.
Up at dawn, slinging pots and pans, stuffing a cooler with lunch goodies, off to the river, back and dinner time. Then to bed, to sleep, perchance to dream. Do have another MUST HAVE toy!! It's from Ireland (or made there anyway) called a "Kelly Kettle." These are the 'cat's meow.' Bit of paper, dry sticks from the beach (I bought a bag of Hickory wood chips and fire starters.) Light that off and you've got a quart of BOILING water for tea/hot drink in about 5 minutes.
http://www.kellykettle.com/
Tell 'Santa' you want one; all sorts of extra things you can get for it to turn it into a BBQ, etc. Anyway, 'alone again,' and time to slow down the fishing (Every day, save for one or two this past three-three/half weeks.)

$ 66 US for the mini kettle, you got to be kidding no room to trek that around with me on the river, besides I don't need tea or coffee while fishing, better to use my 20 year old flask of courvesier my friend when needed.

Nooooo,no and no. Skip the 'mini kettle.' The 'big one' holds about a quart of water (give or take a "wee dram") and is far more to the point. HOT water for a cup of noodles - for 2, two 8/10 oz cupa's of tea .. and God is in his Heaven when it's colder than shxt out side.

Yeah, Fred just has the right idea! A little nourishment in a hot cup warms the hands and the belly and makes life worth living! Besides, you do have to pay for quality and convenience, but remember, it's only a "one time" expense.
It serves a dual purpose. It provides you with nourishment and a warm belly, besides serving as a hand warm.
Quit being so "thrifty" and learn to enjoy life a little bit!
Hell, even the "primitive" Indians appreciated that habit which they quickly took to, and had sense enough to take a break for a hot cup of tea, and if they had those dehydrated "noodle packs" back then would have loved them!

Kelly Kettles from Lee Valley Tools I saw a few of them last yr on the Vedder at the boxing day derby. Very civilized, very gentlemanly. Then again, some of the locals up there think sophistication is a mostly clean hockey jersey at Christmas dinner, so those with the kettles get some interesting looks. The usual cold weather tactic is a small bonfire.
On the subject of riverside sustenance, If I weren't such a lightweight, I'd prefer a touch of the bird (Famous Grouse) when the chill sets in. Unfortunately my tying is bad enough without inebriation, so a nip pretty much is the white flag for me. Is this what getting old is like? I ain't likin it so far.
So much to learn, and you guys are all so danged far away.

Well spending $$ on a kettle like that would be something a NYC angler would like to be seen with, you know to be in and cool, however me I have been gone for 27 years now to Gls country where things are more casual in the heart of the US unlike the left and right coasts.

Hal, I have been an Adirondack fisherman and also Canadian waters. I have also fished the Rockies, Yellowstone many times, the Black Hills, the Green River, and been even chased by bull buffaloes and Grizz (and wishing for a BIG rifle instead of a fly rod).
Bur guess what? I learned from the "natives" (including Indians) that a break for a cup of tea by a fire to warm your hands (and your heart, and you CAN spice it up with your favorite beverage) is NICE, and makes for good times, fond memories, and an appreciation for the break!
Sorry, and you may call me a "wuss", but that's just the way it is!

...and you can always smack the annoying critters in the head with the kettle. Pretty sure this would only work for the two-legged critters and maybe the smaller four-legged ones. Them bigger ones with pointy bits require a bit more of a deterrent.

Yup, that's my beach buddy. Never seen them 'advertised' on this side of the pond. I've got the larger of the two and it holds close to a half gallon of water. And, as advertised, it will heat the water to a rolling boil in about 5 minutes.
Water for two 'cup of soup's,' and enough left for two mugs of tea/coffee. Takes a bit of fiddling to get the fuel 'thing' down; best answer I've run into is a bag of hickory chips you'd use on the Barbie (for wood smoke).
Found (Albertons)a box of 'fire starters' that look like a (very) oversized match. Box even has a striker on the side. Anyway a bit of paper (napkins work well), a couple of handfulls of 'chips,' fire off the 'match' and you're good to go.
Only thing (it's mentioned in the instructions) is to point the air 'hole' into any breeze. This creates a bit of a blast furnace effect in the fire chamber. Over on the Chetco River for a weeks fishing (Bruce-0, Fred 0-2 ...missed hooking both) and made beach lunch with the thing. "Works a treat" as the Brit's would say.
As happened last year, we've gone (river flow/RAIN) from low and clear to dumping rain after a couple of days. River flow is more than twice what it was yesterday. Good day to stay inside, drink a toddy or two (love Egg Nog), tie a few flies, drink another toddy ... or two ... etc.
Neat thing is the AtRiver's Edge now has the whole place wired up for wi-fi internet. So at least you're not staring at a bloody tv as the rain comes down. Ah well, hope this is not a repeat of last years trip. (Same time frame, one year later.) First few days of beautiful weather then BANG!
