Nice job 365! hope your rivers are fairing better than ours down here. after last night they're up almost 4 feet with ZERO visibility. keep up the good work.

hopefully multiply it by 200 by april one, we will see how it goes though. next month fishing should become consistant for me. scss, the rivers definatley came up last night, i lost a couple more today, i'm sure they were not winters though. when the water drops i'm sure you will make us all envious, i will be down there a few days, i am sure of that, you have a neat fishery right by home, that is cool. keep us posted, we all are looking forward of your pics, i hope this year treats you as good as last.

no mail?? you can ask me anything on the site, i have no secret techniques, if it's about a spot, it was far from a zipper spot. i will tell anyone on this site anything about the whole scenario. come feb-march i will become zipper on the location, only one zipper river, the rest is for anyone who wants to know

ifish: Do you see many guys flyfishing on the rivers that you fish. I usually make one or two trips to BC to fish for winters in Feb-April but my ride may be in the shop so am looking for someplace to swing in the states. I was planning for the N. Umpqua in March depending on water levels but that would put me within driving distance of your stomping grounds and I like to try new water, even if I don't catch anything.

Thanks,

Mark

also that time of year and 2-3 hours drive is the coos and coquille systems, although not much fly action there

best fly action may be to try the rogue river and that's within driving distance from the n umpqua if you know the roads and have maps and chains, weather permitting and the roads clear

Tony: Thanks. I know The Steamboat well and was planning on contacting Fred soon. He has been very generous with his knowledge in the past. I only fished the Rogue once and it seems to be a drift fishery for most guys. There is some swinging water but I don't know it well enough to go from spot to spot and if I am going to fish with a bobber/float I might as well use spinning gear. Doesn't matter to me how anyone else fishes but I prefer to fish for steelhead with a fly on the swing. But I also us a recurve to elk hunt with so understandably, some folks are going to question my intelligence.

Your comment on the NU was very interesting. Historically, the counts over Winchester Dam show 30-40% of the winter run moves over the dam in February and 30-40% moves over in March. I don't care to catch dark fish but I was assuming that there would be catchable numbers of bright fish in either month and that the water would be warmer in March and therefore, the fish would be more active. Do you feel that there are more bright fish in February? Thanks for your help.

ifish: Thanks for your kind offer. I will PM you later today or tomorrow.

Mark

If our Steelhead returns are anything like our Salmon returns on my home river this year it won't be the best of years. right now the rivers are all blown out with the Coquille and Rogue above flood stage with more rain on the way tonight. hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get back on the river by next week, if they don't show in the next couple weeks it isn't going to happen here. until then it looks like I'll be tying up rigs and consuming mass quantities of caffeine.

Once it's fishable there will be fish of the chrome variety around guys, keep lookin for 30.0 and rising on the barometer and it will be on!

i landed 1 of 6 today, i fished 3 hours in the afternoon, it seems like it should be a dandy year around here, #10 for me so far and i only landed 5 in dec last winter. when scss starts getting them it will probably be a catch up and pass up in the same day, his reports are fun to read! tony, you ever make it down for winters? i may bring the camera tomorrow, it should be good.

the later, the better for these fish troy. don't worry about it being over, feb-march is the prime time, but there will be fish to catch everyday the river is fishable till' april. we will have to fish together when you come over, i was bummed i was working last time. if my zipper is poppin' when you decide to come, the offer is open to get into some awesome steelhead action. we will talk details later maybe pics tomorrow, i will try to remember a camera.

Sounds good Mike! Not to sound like a dip-shi*t, But I would luv to catch one of those black backed, chrome sided steelies you folks have over there. I luv & respect every steelie I have ever seen, caught, hooked, lost, or heard about. That said, I'm still lusting the bright dudes, & will take you up on your offer.

ifish- I hardly ever get home in the winter anymore, but I love it when I can get there to enjoy prime green water in Feb/Mar and put the drift gear in action on a spinnin rod. Add some fresh eggs to a corkie or cheater or spin glo and yeehaw... all day long fish on!

You are dead on re:fish to catch daily as long as it's fishable. Usually chromers available until the end of season closures along the coast.
