Anyone running synthetics in the motor?
I know a friend of the familiy who replaced his reg. motor oil w/synthetic at 20,000 miles in his '03 Nissan Frointer V-6. Truck has now 130k, and he's NEVER replaced the oil, and he doesn't plan to either. Only topped off when he replaces the filter every 5-7,000 miles. Oh ya, it's black now!!! His son-in-law decided to try it, but couldn't handle not replacing his oil ever again. So he's running it to 10,000 miles (including filter), then changing again on his 1995 Chevy Silverado w/the 350.
Don't want to go this extreme on my 02 Tacoma, but sick of changing my damn oil every 3,000. Was thinking of going to sythetic and changing every 12,000 miles, and the filter at 6,000.
Anyone doing anything like this in they're p/u's?

I switched to synthetic oil 3 years ago on my 96 ford 4x4. It is a better oil on your engine. But to hear that your friend is not changing his oil to me is wrong. No matter what type of oil you use you need to change it regularly. For one it does get dirty, there is no stopping it. and topping off dirty oil with some new/clean oil doesnt make it clean. It still has dirt in it! Also whether it is synthetic oil or regular oil they both will break down and lose their ability to perform properly, this is fact and common sense. The one thing with synthetic is its lubricating quality is much better. But it is not invinceable. just think of the inviroment it is in. I would go with synthetic if I were you, but I would change it regulary.

I told him his completely screwy between the ears. But he wont listen.
He said he did this with older Toyota 22R-E and never replaced for 150,000 miles and didn't have any problems. I figured, hey, if someone is that nuts and doesn't have problems, I can go at least 10,000 miles and be safe.
Wanted some other opinions though before I do it. Motor oil is a lot cheaper than... well, the motor itself.

you can get your oil analyzed to see what it contains and if its breaking down your motor. The diesel guys do it when they use the secondary bypass filters and top off at change intervals. I can see doing it with a bypass setup to remove the fine stuff but otherwise.. not

I run syn3 in my Harley now after 15,000 miles of regular motor oil. It has given me no problems and it's almost got 29,000 miles on it now. I change oil and filter every 5,000 miles at a minimum, and of course before and after winter storage.

What's your Toyota owner's manual recommend for intervals? Most say over 3000 now. I'm pretty sure the manual for my Tacoma was higher. The recommended interval for my Ford is 5000 miles under normal conditions.

5k w/conventional oil according to the service manual, cupo. I'm thinking 12,000 miles on Mobil 1 synthetic won't hurt much.
I forget the name a specific racing synthetic oil(s), I just remember it's purple. Guess it's supposed to be the best for any motor (gas anyway). Spendy sh!t though, almost 8 bucks a quart.

royal purple is good but too expensive, many cheaper alternatives that work just as well

Perfect Drift,
IMO, changing your oil regularly is the cheapest thing you can do to make your rig last. Just like good quality terminal tackle for fishing or high quality shells for hunting are the cheapest but most worthwhile ways to spend your $.
I've had 2 Dodge Cummins. Use Chevron Delo. Change every 5k miles. No problems ever.
There's nothing wrong with synthetics at all. But if you're like me - save some $, make your motor happy and go with a regular oil changed every 5k miles. Your truck and your pocket book will thank you.

I agree Paul. But gave it a shot anywho.
Went w/the Mobil 1 Extended Life Synthetic. Besides the Royal Purple, it's supposedly the best synthetic oil you can put in your motor after talking to many mechanics, oil lube techs, etc. According to Mobil, again supposedly it will last 15,000 miles guaranteed. I don't think I can manage to go that long but will check 'er every 3,000 miles to see if it'll last maybe 10k. Definately changing the filter at 5,000 miles.
Ran regular oil for 5,000 miles, as the service department at the local dealership suggested, as did the service manual. At 5,000k it rarely looked that bad, but nevertheless, I always changed it. I could have swore my 94 Toy was dirty as all hell at 3,000. I'm guessing 10k won't be a stretch with the syn, so we'll see.
I did notice immediately better performance. It was actually kind of shocking, really. Increased power, smoother starts and idle. Definate change for sure right out of the gate, and actually am quite impressed. Rumor has it your not supposed to notice an increase in performance till around 12,000-15,000 miles, including increased MPG. So kinda cool to get something out of the synthetics right away.
