If you get a chance, check out the National Geographic Channel "Dog Whisperer". It's a pretty good show.

I saw it last night, they had back, to back, to back episodes. It's more about training the dog's owners than the dogs. I learned a few things about dog behavior. Stored in the memory banks for my next dog.

Subtle changes seem to make a difference already. I've been trying to practice some of what is on the show, not that my dogs are any where near as unruly as the ones one the show. It's interesting on the show how timid dogs take the dominant role if they don't see the person as dominant. Of course, that doesn't work very well.

Making sure the dogs see me as dominant seems to want to make the dogs want to behave quicker without any punishment/scolding which is pretty cool. It's interesting how things like not letting my pup put her paws on my hands when I'm petting her and petting her when she's on her back or sitting only makes a difference to her. Other things like walking out the door first to take her on a leash, are probably also helping.

As far as the Pomeranian goes, backing her up when she barks even without talking much to her makes her stop barking at the door alsost immediately.

it is a great show, i have learned allot from it. it seems portraying dominance and a leash go a long way.

I don't need a dog whisperer. Millie is already well adjusted and happy. We rarely have any issues at all.

What I DO need is a bird whisperer.

Dog whisperer my ass I'm thinking Dog yeller

Oh she tries those eye blinks but it doesn't work with me. I have a size 11 Danner with her name on it. If the damn shock collar had a range of 3 miles I'd shock her ass every 15 minutes because I know she is up to something. Yesterday it was the TP and another light bulb and today it was another stick of deodorant and a computer speaker which where brand new! For christ sake does everything in my house need mounted on the ceiling?

Mike, next time I come up, I'll modify your collar. Mine kicks out 47,000 volts now, and Maggie is an angel. All I have to do is pick up the "remote" and she immediately quits all bad actions, and starts cleaning up her own crap. I almost have her trained to mow the lawn, shovel snow, and fetch high flying ducks. That's a fun trick to watch...

Mike, there's no law against crates when you aren't there.

Joe yes I've been a dumb ass and held the collar in my hand while sitting in the lazy boy and pressed the button on the transmitter while it was on high. I almost wet my pants and I'll tell you right now I won't do that again.

Jim I do have a crate but I'm gone for at least 10 hours a day and keeping her in a crate that long without a break just isn't right. I can deal with her chewing things up because that's what labs do. Today nothing was harmed but the TV was on. I seamed to have left the controller out AGAIN and she did not chew it only turned on the TV. This kinda makes wonder. After 8 remotes (I do have the codes memorized) I think she's getting smarter. She's coming of age and It wouldn't surprise me if she starts charging doggy porn on pay per view!

I've now password protected the computer

Yep, 10 hours would be a problem. I'm able to go home during the day. Others at work, bring their dogs and go out to walk them. I'd hire a dog walker/sitter if the good ones weren't so much and the cheap ones seem shady!

Doggie daycare! I wish there was one nearby. I would love to drop her off for a play date.

Apparently, Millie had a blast at the local kennel for the 5 days we left her. I think she partied the whole time and I was worrying about her being miserable.

Doggie daycare is available at Petsmart and Petco around here. Sounds like a good idea, but if it's anything like childcare costs, some people might need to get a part-time job to pay for it. A neighbor takes her dog to daycare for a reasonable price, and it beats having a dogwalker with access to your home I'm not so much worried about the dogwalker taking anything as I am about them leaving a door open or unlocked.

Doggie daycare, pet spas, pet healthcare insurance, and all the toys, treats, food, and love these critters of ours get is crazy. I need to trade places with the dogs.

We could just make do with a "play date" if I could find someone interested. Petsmart and Petco are a 45 mile drive from here.

It is something Southfork might want to look into though... daycare.
