first post on here so ill introduce myself first. rob, 26 from new jersey. been fly fishing for about four years now. fishing and hunting all my life.
ok first off i know nothing about spey casting except from what ive seen on tv. anyway while sitting in work last night dreaming about fishing and after watching a steelhead show the night before i got to thinking about utilizing spey casting in the surf for stripers. the idea came from being able to use a two handed cast to conserve energy to fish longer. i wanted to know what you guys think. do you think it would be an advantage utilizing spey techniques in the surf, or even possible for that matter? any comments would be appreciated.

Rob, you would be amazed at how much farther you'll be able to cast, and how much easier it is (once you learn how) to cast. It'll take some time on the water, but I think you'll make it successful.

Welcome to the site.
Yes, spey will work in Saltwater too. The RIO casting DVD called Modern Spey Casting demostrates it along with many casting techniques.

the reason i was skeptical was b/c of all the spey techniques ive seen, your fishing 45 degrees down stream and not stripping in a decent amount of line. where as on the surf the majority of times ill be stripping in the majority of my cast. like i said i dont know the first thing about spey casting, is there times where you strip alot of line?

Yes, you can strip, and shoot if you want. That's one of my friends favorite techniques in both a river and saltwater. I guess that at point, you have to do something other than a spey cast, but nothing keeps you from using a spey rod!

Wow, a fellow Jersey guy on steelheader.net, I grew up there are fishing IBSP with the spey yet. I did last year and the bay for stripers.

whats up black? you still live here or just visit? ive yet to see anyone with a spey rod, never heard a soul mention it at any fly shops or anywhere else for that matter. thats why i didnt even bother asking anyone around here, figured id go right to here and ask instead.

First 2 handers are commonly used for surf fishing for stripers; but the usual is 'over hand casting' rather than a 'normal spey cast.' Lighter lines and zing!

Spey techniques are very effective in salt and freshwater ... But for plain ol' distance and rapid sink give me my shooting head and amnesia running line ..

I grew up in Northern NJ, Bergen county - Teaneck. Family is back there, Brick Township and up in Bergen. I have been in Chicago area since 79, get back to Jersey every couple of years or so.
May want to go with a 9/10 14-15 footer for the surf, thought m my 9 wgt was a little too light when the wind kicked upon Barnegat bay. Thought there would be more salt spey rodders there by now there are in Massachusetts, the cape, etc.

they maybe doing it down in ibsp i dont fish down there that often. thanks for the advice on rods and congrats on leaving jersey, haha

fish the hook mostly, but also certain spots on the raritan bay. couple of other ocean spots aswell, just never really get all the way down to ibsp
