I fished below the John Day Dam monday for walleye for 4 hours and got 3 fish. No trophies, just good eating size. The water was 40.8 degrees and a little cloudy. The fish were in the slower water between 26 and 30 ft. I went to the other end of the pool today and fished just above The Dalles Dam for steelhead. I noticed a few fish on the bottom at about 30 ft in places where I have caught walleye before, so I will go back out tomorrow morning with walleye gear to see if I can catch them. I did get one bright native steelhead today, and my friend got a 38" b-run hatchery fish.

STS had a nice article in this months issue on trolling floats and jigs for steelhead behind John Day, might be worth a shot in the Dalles as well.
Thanks for the report!

What did you use for bait/lures?

I use an apex 1-1/2" trout killer that I retie with 2 #2 octopus hooks on a 4 ft. leader. I use a worm on the hooks and put it on the bottom with a 3 oz bait walker sinker. I troll downstream using just enough electric to keep the bow down stream. I have found that the chartreuse trout killer seems to work better in the early season.
