custom bowstring
      #273390 - 01/09/07 11:12 PM

I have a martin phantom 2 . I took it in to have tuned and found out it lost 4 lbs. I've only had it 1 year. The bow tech said martin strings are notorious for this.
Does anyone know of a good company that custom makes bowstrings.

My custom strings are made by Mike's Archery in Illinois, but I'm not sure if he's taking new customers. Most target archery shops should be able to hook you up. I doubt you really need another string and you could still have variation even if you attempt to change the string to a different length. You could have other issues with the serving moving or being a different size which will make your nocks fit differently.

4 lbs can be as little as 1/2 inch length variation. Also, it is normal for strings to stretch a little after shooting a few shots. As long as the draw isn't too short, it shouldn't be much of an issue. The inside string/cable could be too long or the outside string could be too short. Also, the outside string could just have too many twists.

You can add about 1/2-1 turn to top and bottom limb bolt to gain the weight back. You can also gain the weight back by adding twists to the inside string. Add the same number of twists to top and bottom. I would add the twists in increments of 5. Measure the tiller on top and bottom before starting and keep the same relative difference. This assumes you have a press or have access to one.

It doesn't sound like the "tech" knows very much which isn't really that strange, but just so you know, there are a few different "fixes" other than buying different strings.

I don't know about custom strings but Winners Choice are pre-stretched and are some of the most durable strings on the market That being said Jim has Good info on string stretch. I typically loose about a 1/2 pound of draw weight due to string stretch w/ Winners Choice easily fixed w/ string twist.

Thanks for the info guys.
The reason I took it in its not grouping well. I tried paper tuning. And at 5 yrds its tail high about an inch. I'm shooting a 2 prong fall away rest, using a release with d loop. Set at 70# shooting easton epic 400 arrows.
The bow tech said everything was tuned right The only thing was loss in draw weight. I never tried paper tuning with my old bow but It sure grouped better. I used to be able to put them in a tennis ball at 40 yrds. Now cant do that at 20. Might have to use the old one next year again if I cant get it shooting better.
Thought the string would be a starting point.

Your dloop could be shorter than it was. If so, then it could make it harder to shoot. I'm assuming these are the same arrows/points.

If the outside string is shorter, then the draw length of the bow is now shorter. You want to shoot it from the back of the valley. You can shoot from the bottom, but they are typically really short values so it is hard to tell where you are. Also, if you let up just a little, you'll hit the power portion of the cam. If you pull too far into the limbs, it will be very critical. You want the rollover to increase for the cam. The distance from where the string goes into the cam and where it sits on the cam to be less.

The other thing I'd try is changing the tiller to be 1/8 to 3/8 out on the bottom. You'll have to move your nock point lower if you do this. This makes shorter bows a little more forgiving. I'd also check the timing of the cams to make sure they are turning over at the same time. If they don't, the bow will be more critical. If you changed the inside cables/strings, then this is pretty possible that they are off.

Other things like a bent axle ungreased axle sticky cable slider are also possible but less likely.
