Well, if you're going in to BEAR country, especially GRIZ, better pack a .44 mag at a MINIMUM! Most of the time, you won't need it, except to shoot a warning shot, but if he just keeps coming, DO HIM SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE!

Why end up a "statistic"!

I once was chased across the Firehole in Yellowstone by a "teenage" bull buffalo - he didn't like my looks, apparently, and a large amd heavy caliber RIFLE would have felt good in my hands, but you CAN'T carry firearms in Yellowstone! Fortunately, yelling and acting agressive scared away a couple of Griz, and at a distance, but it sure was scarey!

If you want the 9mm then the Hi-points are a decent if ugly gun and you should be able to find them for less than $150. They work fairly well in my experience and I haven't heard to many bad things from people that actually owned them. If you where interested in a 1911 Rock Island Armory 1911s can be bought for about $350 and have a very good reputation and customer service if something does go wrong. I got one for christmas and after a short break in it hasn't malfunctioned for a few hundred rounds so far. The Ruger's are also nice guns and very durable but revolver grips just feel so wrong in my hands(although the ones that come on the GP100 are one of the nicer grips I think) I don't like double action triggers either but when I get around to buying a revolver it will have one.

This might be a decent resource for the hi-points. http://hipoint.7.forumer.com/

If it helps I know at least 4 people that own 9mm or .45 hi-points(not me personally though and I've only shot one of them) and the only problem I know of besides being ugly and a less than ideal trigger pull is they had some jams until they put a little bit of oil in the magazine.
