Quail Techniques new
      #273498 - 01/11/07 02:18 AM

I'm looking at doing some quail hunting here in central oregon this weekend. As I am a newbie at bird hunting I was going to ask if anyone has some tips or advice before I head out?

Thanks.

Jake

Focus on riverbottoms and brushy draws. Quail are my springer spaniel's favorite game bird. She will get in to the heaviest brush and route out the runners.

Shoot quick, and use the shortest coupled shotgun you can find, because they present a lot of snap shots.

My first question is:

Are you a confident wing shooter?? If you answer yes then more than likely you won't be at the end of the first day. If you answered no, then you will be much better off at the end of the first day knowing that you lived up to your own low expectations.

Thats said...I agree with mojo and have fun!

Lots of time quail will give themselves up with their squawking as they are running around trying to decide whether to fly. I have a little quail call I pack which has actually been useful. Beat the brush and be quick on the draw. If a nice covey gets up, aim for the lead. I dropped four in a shot a few years ago. Also, when those covey's get up, there are always stragglers/singles which don't jump right away. Wait for a minute or so to make sure everyone has jumped and be sure to mark where the main group went. I've spent a whole morning picking singles out of the same covey. Good luck and have fun!

A good dog is a plus. You'd be surprised how tight those birds will hold after you have broken up a covey. No dog and you'll walk right by them.

We have a lot of open range where I live. Lots of sage brush. We just had a fresh blanket of snow come in. Will I find quail out in the sage brush now? Also, I am a little unclear on regulations regarding game birds. I bought my combo fishing/hunting license yesterday. Do I need additional tags, permits, etc to shoot quail? I know for ducks I need a stamp... any and all info helps. (can you guys tell I'm a first timer???)

Jake,
Quail will scatter into the sagebrush once you flush them out of the creek bottoms and brushy draws. We have exactly the same type habitat over in western Idaho. Start with the biggest river in your area (over here it's the Snake), and try to hunt the brush and timbered areas along it's banks. If you can't do that, move to the smaller rivers and creeks. Quail seem to always be found near water, in the riparian habitat. You might find a few in the scrub brush, but not near as many as in riparian zones.

Also I forgot to mention earlier, uses 7 1/2 or 8 shot and improved cylinder or wider chokes.
