What are your.....
      #273666 - 01/12/07 08:54 AM

thoughts on shop lighting?
I am finishing up the new wood shop, and mentioned to Marty that I was going to put in flourescent lighting.
He said that he had heard years ago, that flourescent lighting was not good for a wood shop, 'cuz of the "strobe effect" causing the table saw blade to look like it was standing still.
I have not been able to find anything else about that. What d'ya think?
The walls and ceiling will be sheetrocked, lightly textured, and painted semi-gloss white. There are 3-3'X4' windows. The shop is be 12'wide, 35' long, and has a 10' ceiling.

I think it will be fine, but only if you plan on running all the saws when sober and not in the mood to disco under the strobe.

Nice shop! My Dad has a 24'x24' wood shop has all sorts of stuff and I never seen the strobe effect. Sure you might get that if the shop is cold and the lights need to warm up.

I used the 4ft lithonia lights from home depot with 40 watt T12 bulbs in the back of my shop and have never had a problem. In the front of the shop I have the old 8ft flourescents which strobe and will be replaced. The 4ft's are a lot brighter also.

I've only seen that with the el-cheapo lights or when they are cold. Having everything painted white you are not going to need as many lights. I'd have a couple of swithes so you don't have to turn all of them on when you just go in to get something out of there.

If you go with flourescents, DEFINITELY spend the extra $$ and get high output lights. Bulbs are a little more too, but well worth it. They don't buzz and aren't affected by the cold so much.

Sounds like a nice sized shop. My 'shop' is whatever space I can carve out of 1/2 of one bay in my garage. The endless renovations and associated materials always seem to take up all the rest of the space.

Like a lot of us office-bound inmates, I hate working under flourescents. Some people don't mind it a bit, but there are those of us who swear we can actually see the flicker. Playing around with puter monitors and refresh rates will demonstrate very quickly whether you are one of us lucky ones or not. (WARNING: Don't mess with this on LCD monitors)

Given the option, I'd go with background lighting with indirect/reflected flourescent fixtures, (cuts down on shadow effects) and a combination of halogens and 'yellow' lights for task/reading/work lighting. I prefer halogens for focused lighting, but broad spectrum 'natural' lighting for close handwork where color makes a difference; Tying jigs/flies, etc. I stole my wife's 'OTT-Lite' and it's great.
Now if only I actually sat down and did some work that wasn't on this infernal 'puter thingy.

My dog likes any kind of lighting that makes shiny spots on the ground she can pounce on. Flashlights are best.

Just got back from Home Depot. T-8 1" tubes vs. T-12 1.5" tubes. They claim T-8's are more effecient, and they did seem brighter on the demo models. Electronic ballast for sure.... no hum, and instant start in cold.
Now the question is T-8, or T-12?

Well, a post about lights, but I'd recommend a smoothwall finish with eggshell or flat paint. The sawdust will "stick" less to a smoothwall finish, and that same dust is going to cover that semi-gloss anyway.

Do you have a dust recovery system built in?

Well...I have decided to go with the smooth finish, mostly because the quotes I got were about 25% less with no texture or paint. I will paint it myself, and I think I will still use the semi-gloss, 'cuz it's tougher paint.
I will be opening the door and blowing off the walls occasionally with the gas powered blower anyway.
I do have a dust collection system, and it will be built in after I confirm the placement of the tools.
I have it all wired now, and ready for insulation. That should happen this week, then the drywall.

I have a 24x48 shop. All my lights are 8' high output. Great lighting.
