I am curious as the idea keeps coming up. What are the collective thoughts here. I believe as many do that there is a need for a large and politically effective organization here in Washington. What is keeping that from happening and why? There are many smaller specific organizations for different purposes and watersheds but no singularly powerful organization....why??

We all donate large amounts of money to one fishing/hunting organization, the WDFW. That should be our clout, but...Why? Bill

There was an attempt to form such a group recently. So far it has been the leadership of such groups that keeps me from supporting them.

Welcome, polepole.
On another note, how about getting some celebrities who fish involved? No, I don't mean people in STS or outdoor tv. I mean movie stars and musicians.
Or, maybe we could sic peta on nets. Isn't that a cruel way to kill a fish?

I posted the NSIA PAC link on another thread and got no response. It may not be perfect, but it is up and running. I gave them 150 bucks last year and just sent in another 100. This is small change considering how much we all have invested in boats, trucks, gear etc. There is a member ship blank on the website. You can become a memeber for 50 bucks. If 1000 guys gave 50 bucks that would be enuff to buy some state politicians. This is the US of A. The only thing that counts is $$$$$.

Barchaser - Thanks for the info, my question is what are some of NSIA's accomplishments? What are their plans for the future? Are they showing up (along with their supporters) at WDFW meetings to take up the sporties side?

I'm concerned that NSIA is recruiting membership in the Puget Sound, when their work has been primarily in Oregon and on the Columbia River issues. They are a good organization, but I'm concerned that they are wasting too much time/money on dam removal issues that have little to do with Puget Sound. Just an FYI.

If they are going after dams, then they are more an environmental issue group. Although you may or may not agree with theat, that would be fighting the federal government. I believe we need to go aver our state authorities first. At least, we elect them for the most part!

Jim, the dam is not their main focus and it seems that it's more of a recent thing with them. I wonder about the wisdom of funneling sport fishing support/dollars from the Puget Sound area fishermen though, who likely won't see as much a return for those dollars. Businesses can afford to spread it around. I don't think we can.
Which leads me to the idea I've expressed before. Why can't all these NW groups get together under an umbrella organization? Do away with turf battles and work together instead of separate!

Well, that's part of the problem. Sporties are too obsessed with identifying what disagreements they have with each other. I'd like to ask "what is it we have in common?". If you were to choose one "rallying" issue, what would it be? An issue that the majority of us would agree it is worth fighting for. An issue that we have grounds to stand on and isn't an effort in futility? No, it isn't dam removal or elimination of native fishing rights either. I've seen rallying issues unite fragmented groups in CA with a large group leading the charge, a large online forum pushing as well, and dozens of smaller groups getting in line.

Polepole, my rallying issue is pretty obvious and one I think you've seen me post about already.
Harvest management isn't being conservative enough.

I think the "new" group should go after one issue at a time. Let's start with banning all nets in Puget Sound and go from there. For a more targeted approach, then go after particular rivers one at a time. Obviously, rivers like the Quinault, don't count. There may also be a couple of others.

The devil is in the details Aunty. So let's explore this a bit. My first thought was that it is too broad. Then I went back to my CA experience. We challenged the DFG who were being TOO conservative on lingcod size and bag limits as well as other groundfish regs. In general their groundfish management was based on "bad" data, and we all knew it from anecdotal evidence. We needed proof and started our own creel surveys and at the same time pushing the powers at be to revamp their process. It happened. And wouldn't you know it, the two new data sets more or less matched, with the new data showing that the previous data, which was used to set policy, was basically junk.
So ... what's our angle(s) on this one?

I don't think there is one that will work.
The difference between what you were able to accomplish in CA, and what's possible here is that you likely had consensus working in your favor. I doubt you'll find very many people/groups here willing to agree that there IS a harvest management problem for starters. When you successfully fracture those groups into the different 4H camps, you get what we have today. A bunch of whiners and complainers unwilling to accept any personal responsibility and two other harvest groups that are much better organized and willing to put their time and energy into preserving the status quo.

Not an exercise in futility? Well, I guess that pretty much ends the discussion, because I can't think of one that isn't truly an exercise in futility when it comes to salmon and steelhead management.

Don't look to me for an answer. There's no single group out there that is going be able to fully represent my viewpoints or have the integrity I demand. If you feel the need to have a group supporting your views politically there are quite a few to choose from.

Gooose, all of our current groups don't have much to show for themselves. Don't you want to create a new group that actually gets a major issue handled? It's not like the groups don't accomplish anything because they do. It's just that they are taking baby steps in a marathon.
I'd like to have a group that scares politians when they get lobbied by them. You know, a group like the NRA, etc.
Wouldn't that be fun?

Sure Jim I'd love to see such a group. So shall we propose a single issue that this group would advocate?
