Calling all Duck hunters!
      #275328 - 01/24/07 10:09 PM

I have heard that this weekend is the last one for the ducks and I wish I would have thought of this sooner, but it would absolutely make my year if I could get my hands on some mallard hackle feathers that I use to tie a shrimp fly that has been deadly on all my favorite rivers.

I am not sure but I think the hackle is on the neck? I'll take any mallard carcasses you guys get.

Much appreciated,
and good luck

The mallard bronze feathers are on the flanks/shoulders I believe. I may have some laying around...if I do you can have them.

Jack - I have some around my house. Those feathers are located under the wings going toward the back.

I got a bunch of the feathers, but you have to give me some of the secret shrimp flies to try out. Just PM me and you can come pick them up or I can hand them to you on the river if you are out there. If you would have put this up before monday I could have dragged a couple of mallard carcasses out of the trash for you.

Doc-
Drake or hen doesn't matter. I'll actually take any carcasses you get because I am not 100% sure it even has to be mallard. Just as long as it is a wide semetrical feather that I can cut a "V" out of. The mallard bronze that I have used before are not as wide and usually not very long on the one side. I think that's why the hackle works best. I am no expert, I just know the flies catch steel.

Doc I've got a huge box of mixed feathers. No ducks this year.

I will try to get a picture posted. I have never done that before since I am new to the site but I'm sure I can figure it out.

The large gray barred flank feathers would probably have a more even distribution of feather on either side of the quill. I suspect that you need some length in the fibers that you will not get from the feathers from the neck region.
