That time of the month..... new
      #275084 - 01/22/07 05:13 PM

OK what do I do now? Besides shooting any male dog that I have a safe shot at. I waited for the first cycle because several have told me you need to before you spey them. Now I have some telling me that if they bare a litter they will become there own (about the only way I can explain this). I don't have the time for this but her bloodlines would be worth it.

Is there anybody out there that does this? Like I said I don't have time for this , but to let her bloodline stop would be a shame.

You should wait til at least the second cycle. However, reality means you wait longer to breed more responsibly. That is, a dog has to be at least 2 years old to OFA for hip dysplasia. I'm not sure what age for CERT which I think is common for Labs now.

As far as bloodlines continuing goes, I wouldn't worry about it. You can't predict the result without having a litter. They are a lot of trouble just to find out what the result is! Not to mention until those pups have pups, you still don't know what you produced! Not to mention, there is no guarantee that your bitch would even conceive easily, or develop health problems due to having them. For instance, there is more chance for breast cancer if she has pups.

Unless you are sure you want to raise pups, you should spey her.

I agree with Jim completely. We spayed Maggie after her first heat. She is actually settling down nicely (at 3 years old). Good dogs are smart, and usually have energy. Maggie will hunt her legs off for you. She now spends days off lounging around the hose.

I'm telling you there is hope, just be patient. My lab was a pain in the ass till she was 2. The next 11 years were great.

Mine's about seven...and has never slowed down. A mellow two year old would be pretty good most days. Gets so anxious she shakes for hours. Somebody treated her wrong when she was young. that's my guess.
