Well, I know it's still a bit early, but I'm just curious if anyone's picking up any smallmouth yet? I went out and tried Lake Stevens this weekend for a little bit on Saturday with no luck. Pig and jig on the steep drops and slow rolling spinnerbaits down low, probaby still a bit cold.

It's never too early.
Flat tail or curly tailed grub on a 1/2 oz. football head. Avacado or brown colors. Fish it from deep to shallow (60 - 30 ft)
Drop shot tiny senko - 40 to 60 ft.
1st. annual "Freeze your bASS off" tournament on Lake Sammamish is Feb. 17th. $1,000 guaranteed for big fish. Brrrr.

Try samammish. I think it stays/gets a little warmer than most of the other lakes in the area. Last year i got a 5lb largemouth shaking a worm in 12' of water on feb 26th. I think dropshotting or dragging a beaver/football head combo real slow will be your best bet.

I hit up Sammamish on Saturday all day - didn't even realize that there was a tourney going on. Fished 7 to 3 and didn't get anything, but i made it to weigh-in and saw some nice bags of fish. Lots of nice boats that made me embarrased of my 12 foot tin can.

I fished my local lake on Saturday, Got one largemouth about
4lbs. got it on a rattletrap.
Nice day on the lake and nice suprise to get a largie this early!

That’s all I needed to hear Shaun. This damn job has worn me down. I forgot what water even looks like. But it looks like I may be coming back down to Lacey. Got something in them mix right now that really looks promising. What’s the word, been out much in general?

Back to Lacy? Where you been. Kapowsin was beautiful on Saturday until the wind came up. 43 degree water with a little color from the rain. No bites but I was spending all my time playing with the new Aqua Vu. Hobbs Jr. won the 1st. tourney at Sammamish with about 14 lbs. which is no surprise. He has won almost as many Sammamish tournaments as Dana Rose (my partner).  First 3 places weighed limits.

Hey Steve. Man – I’ve been out of it, that’s where. I’ve been at this Bellevue/Kirkland gig for the last couple months. Between the new job and other “fun”  little surprises that keep coming up I haven’t done much of anything. Haven't even picked around on here hardly. But looks like that’s all going to change. No more suit and tie for this guy, possibly be doing some regional work in the South Sound and on the Peninsula. HQ would be back in Lacey. How’d the camera work out? I’ve wanted to dink around w/ one of those for a while, that’d musta been fun on Kapowsin w/ all that cover and structure. Any hawgs?

Hey Pinch, Its starting to pick up! My friend just got off the lake and got 2 smallies a 2lb and a 4lb.
He said water temp was 48!!
I havnt been out on the water all winter ive been working too much! about 75 to 80 hour work weeks.
So when are you steve and me gonna get out and get after them?
Hey Steve..Ive fished against Hobs JR. in tourneys and he is the sh.. !! he is an awesome fishermen!

Yep same one. Still planning on selling it, but probably not after the summer. I might be interested in the electric, need to figure out where the boat is going, and have to deal w/ WA licensing, figure out if they want me to pay sales tax on the damn thing.

We usually fish Dorena, Cottage Grove, Fern Ridge (just out of Ohji). It's going to depend on the weather. We're running a 19 ft. Charger Bass boat but it's too early to get very excited about standing in the rain. I like the coastal lakes too. Ten Mile has been good to me ($$).

Yes, Tenmile is good and has been for some time. I remember fishing it back in the mid 80s and having great success in the channel fishing lillypads. Also did well for 20+" 'bows in the same channel, next to the fuel dock and Easter Seals boat ramp. Then at night all of us would gather along the beach and fish for cats, what a hoot!
Tenmile also had a great population of bluegill and perch, but I haven't fished it in so many years. I still drive by it every time I take a run to the coast, but I never fish it anymore.
I heard hybrids were introduced and doing well. Can you confirm/deny this?
If they are in there now, I wonder how the rest of the fish are doing.
I'm familiar with all the others you named also, but Tenmile is my favorite of them.

Hybrids were introduced but I heard that they quit a few years ago. Plunking sand shrimp on a Carolina Rig worked well for them. I'm not sure how many are still in there.

I went back out to my lake on Saturday and got a 3lb Smallie a 2 lb smallie and a 3 lb largemouth. Its heating up!!!!

Speaking of heating up; Is there a water temp below which they don't bite? I've heard talk of a few bass lakes in my area, and am wondering if it's too early to hit em.

You can catch bass year round, of course as it warms up it gets easier!
Id say when the water temp hits 50 degrees its a good time to hit the water.

50 is warm? Wayyy back in the day I surfed WA and BC coast, and lemme tell ya, warm was not the word we used to describe the water. Thanks - I'll do some experimentation now.

Mid-day. It takes a bit for the "sun" to warm the water and get the bugs hatching, etc. If your fishing deep (30-60 ft) for Smallies then the time of day doesn’t matter much at this time of the year.

Most of the lakes around here that I'm thinking of hitting are less then 20' deep (more like less than 15') and early AM or evening are my only options for most days.
Another Q - For the fish, do I need to cover my scent as much as I wish some of my co-workers would before getting in the elevator?

Sounds like Largemouth fishing to me. Evenings should be better this time of year. The scent question never ends. Some guys won't fish without it, some don't use it all. I don't think it helps at all on reaction baits cause they don't have time to follow a scent trail or smell the bait. With slower baits, plastics and jigs, scents can't hurt. Overall, I very seldom use them.
