Need some experienced advice for my trip in June.
1. Is it worth the security hassle of checking a gun on a plane to have as means of protection in AK?
2. What is the cheapest/best way to get your catch frozen and shipped back to the lower 48?
3. This one for you locals: We may want to camp while in AK. Are there any good campgrounds that you would suggest we look into? Area - Kenai Pen. or any area close to the fishing!!!
5. What lb test line should I load my reels with? 25 enough? Braided/Mono?
6. Does anyone ever use for salmon like they do for steelies?
Thanks!

1. I guided there 25 years and never felt that a gun was necessary. Are you thinking about protection from Bears or from humans?
2. I always did fillet and vacuum packed my clients fish. Expensive, yes! You could take saran wrap/baggies and do your own and then just buy freezer space at one of the fish care places in Soldotna. Purchase a "wet-lock" fish box from the processor to ship any fish home.
3. There is a very nice city park in Soldotna. Centennial Park, located very near the bridge that crosses the Kenai River in Soldotna.
4. 25 should work. I use and prefer mono.
5. I never did see anyone using jigs but ya never know!

I've never been there (yet), but have spoken to several people who have. The most important factor is understanding the bear population of your destination, IMO.
What could be a worse hassle: the one that will happen at the airport, or the one that *might* happen that *could* threaten your life?

Enjoy your trip!

I very rarely carry while I'm fishing. Usually 2500 of my closest friends are close by and 1500 of them are packing, so why should I?
There are a couple of packing plants in Soldotna,Seward, homer areas. none are cheap. If you can, have them flash freeze your fish and then pick them up just before flying out. Get a fish box and check it on the plane with you.
20 or 25lb mono will be fine.
Lots of campgrounds in all the areas you want to fish. Centenial is nice and right on the Kenai, a little further South is th Kasilof. A couple there also, state and private. Russian river is always an option, but you better book now. you can do it online.
Nope, I've never seen anyone else using jigs, they look at me like I'm stupid, until the bobber goes down.

I went to the kenai pen last summer...
1. Cant comment on the gun thing...i didn't take one. Nor did I ever feel like I was in danger from a bear at least.
2. I bought two Coleman max coolers with wheels and put fishing gear in them on the way down along with a bag for the gear on the way back. I figured that I couldn't ship 50 lbs of fish back for less than 50 bucks...Alaska airlines charge 50 buck for an extra piece of checked luggage. I had my stuff filleted & vac packed & flash froze...they had a scale and let me pack them to 50 lbs & then provided shredded newspaper fill to top them off...fish stayed frozen the entire flight home and for another 4 or 5 days on my front porch in 90 plus heat...until I could get my smoking operation up & running!
3. There are lots of place to camp. That what we did we fly down & met my parent in there motor home.
4. I say depends on what your fishin for. I took a lami keni special with 50 lb braid...figured I would be prepared for anything.
5. I've heard of folks around here using big jigs for tidewater kings....& form what Alaskan say it sounds like it works there too!
Hope this helps...be prepared to be flexible in where & what your going to go fishin for. Cause the run timing could get messed up or if the nets go in at the river mouths things go dead pretty quickly!
