I watched a very cool show on Discovery, Future Weapons, last evening. It's hosted by a former Navy Seal who gets to use and view weapons of today and tomorrow. One of the coolest weapons I saw him use was a new MP7 from H&K that shoots a 4.6 mm (25 gr) round from a rifle-like cartridge at 2400 fps that pierces armor like it was a slice of bread. He shot several rounds into a 'brain bucket' and let's just say in real life there would be no resistance from the enemy after this awesome weapon.
If that wasn't cool enough, he then fired a cold bore shot from the new Barrett Arms model 99 sniper rifle and at 2500 yds put it on target. That's a mile and a half shot!
This is what a sniper said of this weapon “My spotter positively identified a target at 1400 meters carrying an RPG on a water tower. I engaged the target. The top half of the torso fell forward out of the tower and the lower portion remained in the tower.” 325th PIR Sniper
Think that has a psychological impact on the enemy?
Anyhoo, if you want to see the show, check Discovery and tune in. If you are in need of a boost, this will do it.

One point to remember is that H&K is a German company who sells arms internationally. Therefore, the other guys have these weapons available also. Was the "brain bucket" one of ours? Did the show mention any protection from these weapons for our troops? Sniper rifles are cheaper and easier to buy then Stingers and they have those.

TH
It was one of our brain buckets, but no matter who makes the lid this round will make an entrance and exit. It also did the same thing on a set of body armor- in and out both layers of armor.
The only real protection against these is to not end up on the business end of the muzzle. With rounds exceeding 2400 fps from the MP7, standard armor is useless. I think the MV from the .416 cal sniper rifle is 3250 fps with a 400 gr round, again body armor and vehicle armor is useless.
While these weapons are cheaper, can the enemy effectively deploy them and achieve mission success with them? I doubt it. On the front lines, our enemies are benefitting from a recent surplus in cheap Stinger-type SAMs which have more lethal abilities, and require less technical experience to take choppers down.

Tony, People back in "the world" during Nam didn't think the NVC could deploy weapons either. Bad assumption, good way to die. Each of us who develop weapons systems have our equivalents working for other countries and they are as good as we are. I agree with Fishhog, very, very scary.

No doubt it is scary to think about, but my point was/is the enemy can't expect to win if they can't deploy a sniper's rifle due to range to target, and the unlikelihood of disabling/destroying our assets. With a SAM, the enemy has a much greater range with a much greater likelihood of destroying the target.

I've got to be suffering from Old Timers Disease because I'm not quite following you. Sorry. Currently we are fighting snipers in Iraq and Afghanistan. In both cases they are shooting from extremely long distances and are very efficient. An example would be firing from across the canyon while we are crossing a bridge. I saw the video on that one. It required a jet with rockets to take him out. Never under estimate your opponent.

Yes, snipers are in every theater and have an effective range of usually less than 1200 yds or so with a .50 cal rifle. The trajectory and limitations of the load make it so-so beyond that range.
The .416 places our snipers within range at 2500 yds, more than double the effective range of a .50 cal.
With this in mind, if you eliminate your enemy from twice the distance, odds are he won't know what killed him and his buddy, and he'll never be able to engage you due to the range.
If he can use a highly destructive SAM that engages you at up to several miles, maybe he has a chance. At least until the Predators get a fix on his position... hehe :boom:
Q- Why did it take a jet and rockets to eliminate him?
A- Air superiority with minimal risk to ground troops IMO.

Wow - If the .418 so dramatically increases the effective range, imagine what would happen if you gave a few pissed-off Canucks some of those. Ever hear of Cpl Rob Furlong ? and his team? Cpl Furlong hit a kill shot of 2430m (2657yds = 1.5 MILES)Over several days, the team killed many more at slightly less than that distance. The team will not reveal how many more. This was in Afghanistan in 2002. The Canucks were there as force protection for US Forces and did an incredible job. 5 Bronze stars etc for their work from the US. From the CDN's? Abandonment and humiliation. They were using McMillan TAC-50's. Nice .50 BMG rifle based on the Rem 700 but nothing as robust and technical as the Barretts. They did a great job, but got royally screwed by the CDN military. This article should amaze you and piss you off, regardless of what flag you salute. 'We Were Abandoned'
These guys were from the same regiment my birth-father retired from. I know others who've served/are serving in that unit. 3 PPCLI Edmonton

5.56 (.223) ammo loaded to SS109 specs will do the same thing as those HK rounds. I have 1,000 loaded, and another 1,000 projectiles. All the ammo has is a steel penetrator core. Nothing new there, other than the caliber.
I really liked the .50cal/25MM grenade launcher gun.

That was a great show, and I've seen others. Wish we had had some of that weaponry back in Nam.

Some of that Dragonhide body armor woulda been pretty nice in Nam, too, Dean. They even tested it for smothering a grenade, and it didn't allow any penetration at all.

Don't recall seeing that...just caught part of the last show. Wonder how that new stuff compares bulk-wise with the old flak jackets. Ours were so heavy and bulky that more often then not we left em back in the patrol base along with the gas masks.

Dean the new stuff is lighter, but still weighs a bit, and not nearly a sclumsy/bulky as you wore.
Much lighter, more effective even with today's combat loads including a radio, small computer, headset with screen displaying what is the equivalent of a 17" monitor. Very impressive to have so much good gear and still be able to move in it.
