Wife's gun?
      #279167 - 02/26/07 09:13 AM

I'm looking at takin the wife out this fall for deer season and being that she's went through boot camp and survived, I didn't think it would be a stretch to gitter on a deer...we are almost empty nested and it sounds like alot of fun to have a reason to get away in the fall and spend some time together.....my ??? is, i'm looking at a .243 for her, shes only a $1.25, not intimidated by guns as she has shot the military weapons.....what do you experts recommend? I'd like a quality gun, nice round and good accuracy from the barrel...is the .243 too light? Recommendations....it will be used for blacktail and mulies....less than 200yd shots.....whatdaya think???

AND, anyone got a quality rifle to sell?

I'm thinking maybe step up to 270. Still got knock down power at 200 yds, and can do the job on deer and elk too.

270 is a good light flat shooting rifle. Kids can use it too.
Plus more common that a .243

MM- she's not a hunter, but enjoys the fruits of my labor. Ask her how she likes her elk steak cooked

My mom is a hunter tho, and she has a .270 synthetic stock (I forget the brand, but I want to say Remington) she uses for deer and elk. I've shot it a few times and it's sweet! Light, accurate, dependable, plenty of hammer when the time comes...

If I could get my wife interested (not a chance) I would probably get her either a .270 or a .308, my 1st deer rifle was a Savage model 99c, .308 that I started shooting at 10 years old with no problem, my mom liked shooting it too.

Mrs Nav shoots the Savage 99c in .308.

Was her mom's rifle, and had the stock fitted for her.

.270 would be an excellent choice however!

I already have a Remington Mohawk 600 in .308 but it's quite short...thanks Tony, Mark, Scott and Mitch....I'm thinking 308 or 270...being 270 flatter shooting, may bode well for Eastern Wa Mulies/WT...much appreciated!

I've never shot one, but I've only heard good things about the 7mm-08. Supposed to have good power with minimal recoil.

i was told that a 270 was so close to the same as a 243 that the gun shop owner sold it to me in a synthetic stock at age 11 and i shot one clip threw it my shoulder turned purple and i still own the first box of shells i bought for it im now 21 and still dont like it...but it got used for a good cause she became the trade on my browning 7mm mag. ooOOOOOoooo love that gun hehe

i own a .243 and it does an excellent job on deer and if your close enough elk but honestly i wouldnt do that one. but long time ago people did it with less powerful rifles. in anycase for deer especially within 200yards a .243 would do magnificently

My wife shoots the .243 and likes it quite a bit. She kills deer good and dead with it
Now, there certainly isn't anything wrong with a .270...they are flat shooters. More versatile than the .243. But, one thing I believe worth mentioning: the .243 has got to weigh a bit less than a .270. If you plan on doing much walking, that would be a serious consideration for a smaller person.

A 7mm-08 is a good deer gun also besides a 270. Just dont get a 270 short mag theres no real diffrence between it and the regular 270 except it shoot 100 feet faster and the cases split after one shot..

Superfsh-

According to Remington there is only a two ounce difference in weight and only 7/8" difference in length between the .243 and .270 in 700 BDL. Both have 22" barrels.

Welcome to the site adam376!

I think the advantage in weight of short caliber like 7mm-08 or .308 is that a shorter barrel doesn't effect velocity as much since they have less powder to burn and can do it in a short length. They can use a short action which is lighter, and a shorter barrel which is ligter.

However, since the outside diameter of the barrel is the same size and the inside is larger, the larger caliber barrel can be lighter. So the difference between a .243 and .270 with the same barrel length is neglible.

Unless your wife has an issue with recoil already. I hope not. I don't think the caliber is that significant. Just make sure you practice with light loads and only shoot the full power loads when necessary. You can sight the gun in and then let her shoot for instance.

I hunted with my brother's .300 mag once because I was sttictly a bowhunter at the time and a friend wanted to go gun hunting. I can't say I felt the recoil at all when I shot the deer. I was concentrating on the shot and had hunting gear on, I just don't think the kick was that bad. My brother shot it a lot, but that was my first time. I had shot a lot of his rifles though and knew our point of impact was the same.

Stock fit will have a lot to do with the felt recoil. Take her to a couple shops and let her handle as many guns as possible. Depending on how tall she is, a youth rifle may be the best fit, but they only come in short action calibers. the 308, 7mm-08, 243 are all very good rounds, with the first two being my favorites.
I bought my wife a Rem. model 7, 308 a couple years ago and she loves it. We go to the range and she'll shoot a box of 50 and ask for more.

My sister gets to borrow from our dad, his grandfather's Pre-64 Model 88 Winchester .308, and she handles it just fine. We are trying to retire it, but we need to find a left handed 7mm mag. She is one tuff cookie!!!
