Youth Pheasant Hunting
      #279234 - 02/26/07 02:58 PM

I am waiting to hear back from WDFW...Silver Wings is being considered as a youth only pheasant hunting release site. 2 Youths per non hunting Adult. Saturday and Sunday only. Maximum of 10 hunters per day, with 20 birds released each day. Hotdogs, pop and chips after the hunt. I love the idea and am committed to being their every weekend for the season.

Any thoughts on this?? Oh...youth is 15 years and younger.

If this doesn't "fly" then I am considering a shooting preserve for pheasant. Thoughts on this?

That's a great idea Need to get them involved when they’re young. I feel strongly about this b/c of my own experience. One thing my Pops always regretted was not getting us into hunting earlier. We always fished, and hunting has been in our family since the beginning, but hunting was something that took a lot of time. He hunted on the family ranch his whole life, and because of that is extremely hesitant to hunt public land. He took a vet job in WA when we were very young, putting us out of the lifestyle he grew up around down in OR. It required a lot of travel, something I could never afford. My first deer hunt was w/out him here in WA, and I think that really hurt him. All 4 of us boys were playing sports all year, with one other and me playing in college. It didn’t leave for much time, but I had to get out there and I was tired of waiting for the right opportunity… I took the initiative in high school and hunted on my own through college. I couldn't be happier. Since I've been out of college we've hunted deer and elk every year (can't get him to hunt birds tho dammit!). There isn't anything I'd rather be doing than walking around the woods w/ my Pops, listening to his stories about the land we're walking on.

Now my brother has just finished college ball, and he has to make the decision to start on his own as well, and I can tell you, he ain't moving quickly. There's just too many distractions, that's why young is so much better.

Opportunities like this are a great way to get someone hooked. You know the birds are going to be there , and it’s convenient, perfect for the young guns. Like taking a shorty fishing, I always shoot for the bluegill/crappie ponds because I want success early. No

Doc, I’ll be moving back to an area closer to your area soon, I think. If you need any volunteers, please let me know. I would be more than willing to help out. And good luck, hope WDFW sees this as great an opportunity as you do.

Well, disappointing day for me. WDFW said no. Typical no reason approach...just no. Sorry kids!

So, now I am off to find out what it takes to have a pay to hunt property...for pheasant.

Doesn't that figure... here you are trying to do something good and all you get is a NO and the door slammed in your face. Thanks bunches WDFW!!

Anyhoo, don't let them rain on your parade. Carry on with your new plan and hopefully it will come to a good beginning.
