We used to use the Harrington/Harnell blanks many years ago when we did not have anything better but now in my judgment there are much better glass or glass/graphite combination blanks available. I think that the Rainshadow SU blanks are far superior to anything that Harrington ever made. Some of the Lamiglas glass blanks are also much better than the Harringtons were. The Harringtons were HEAVY and SLOW and I can understand why they went out of business. But for those that do not agree, the last time I checked Mariner's Supply on Swan Island in Portland still had a few blanks.

mariner supply hasn't carried harrington in 4 years. i called a place in florida friday. they said the rods haven't been produced since the mid 90s. what made them so great was that harrington blanks were indistructable. yea they were heavy and slow, but they lasted forever. plus the blanks were only 85$ how much are the RS SU blanks?

Brewer,
Yes, I know that they have not been able to get the Harringtons in several years but the last time I checked they still had some in the back room. Call and ask for Craig Hansen.
I agree with CastawayChris the Rainshadow equivalent blanks are better blanks than the Harringtons and they are much cheaper.
I agree that the Harringtons were indestructible but I would respond to that with a quote by Gary Loomis, "I can build a rod that you cannot break but I do not think that you will want to fish with it".

guys, somehow you have missed the target here. its a plunking rod, not something i plan on holding all day long. what made harringtons superior to graphite is its ability to be dropped and banged around on the rocks up at the bonneville dam. basically combat plunking.

Brewer, i will check with Mick Batson at Utmost Enterprises/Fishermans Outlet here in town and see what he has, i know he had a few Harnell blanks around and a few Fishers, they looked to me to be some good plunkin blanks!

The Brewer,
You do not have a problem with a rod for plunking at Bonneville at least not for Spring Salmon fishing this year and probably not for some years to come because it will not open to fishing. However, it may be open to summer and fall fishing. To plunk for Springers you will have to find a place below the I5 bridge.
Another thing that you might keep in mind when looking for older Harringtons or any older fiberglas blank if they are used ones is that fiberglass unlike graphite fatigues with use. The more it is flexed the softer or less stiff it becomes. Older Harringtons that have been used a lot will be quite a bit different in terms of stiffness then they were when new.

Brewer, since i know u will have a bit of a hard time finding those harringtons, here are a few professional suggested Columbia River plunkin stick choices that i have doctored up for ya! There is the SWB80XH 8ft. rated 25-50lb or their is the step lighter the SWB80H 8ft. rated 20-40lb, both of these are made of E-Glass! Another good plunkin setup would be a TS70H a 7ft. 30-50lb and made of E-glass with a solid glass tip which is solid about the last 8 or 10 inches of the rod! I know they are a little short, but they are made of glass like u want and they can easily have a foot or two solid glass extension put in them no problem! Would be very reasonable as well, probably get one with or without the extension for around 40 -50 bucks! Very durable machine it would be!

Well, I got enough parts to build an extra 5000D if your interested.
I'm currently building a 1970's 5000 with 5 bearings and direct drive. This one will be mine until I can prove out my ideas. I'll post pictures when I get done.

this is the story, i'm in contact with a guy who will buy every harrington i can build. if i can find the blanks. thus the search. looks like i have struck out in my search. steve i have not forgot the rods you have. this guy was all horned up for the harringtons. i apreciate all the help on this search. he did not want a ugly stick, nor a brittle lami glass blank.

steve pm me the full specs please. he maybe very interested them.

Brewer,
I think if you could explain the relative advantages/disadvantages of the modern glass blanks from Rainshadow or Lamiglas he would prefer them over the Harringtons. The Harrington blank designs and materials are 40 years old. The modern glass blanks are lighter so more sensitive, faster responding so they will cast and set the hook better, and they are very little less durable. The added wall thickness of the Harringtons does add some to the hoop strength, resistance to crush and shear, but not much and they are NO stronger in terms of being over stressed. The thicker walls are mostly just adding weight.
The glass blanks from Lamiglas, Rainshadow and others that are comparable to the Harringtons are not brittle. They
