Twisp?
      #282966 - 03/30/07 11:50 AM

Ok I plan to go to Twisp for the first time this year to bag my deer. Can or will anyone like to give me a good location to start? I will be there for a week or more so I can take time to look around, but I would sure like to get a P.M. or something to get me started; I'm tired of the small Deer on the Coast.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Somewhere above an old clearcut on a ridge. Seriously though, I haven't hunted that particular areas, but that's pretty much the pattern.

jig_fish, I don't understand why you were asking a question about where to hunt if you know how to hunt mule deer. You should know that they are pretty much evenly distributed over that whole county! My point was just pick a road, and look for the right cover. They only concentrate noticably when they migrate!

That's assuming you don't have rights to the private property over there. If you do, that's a different story.

One other thought seriously, I'd probably check into hunting over near the larger wildfires have been. Those areas should grow back lush. (Maybe that idea is even helpful.)

Jimh: The only reason I ask is because I've never been over to Twisp but I have hunted Mule deer, So the big Question I should have asked is Locations, as for them being evenly distributed I wouldnt know but I'm willing to learn.
And how long ago were the fires? Now thats the kind of stuff I'm looking for,and I'm not asking any one to give up there top secert spots, just starting locations; names of primary roads, or even lesser traveled roads. But i'll look to see if I can find where the fires were. Thanks.
and long shots (300m)+ are not a problem so open land will work too.

The latest was last year. There's been one almost every year, I think and a few years ago they did some prescribed burning. I did a couple of searches, but I didn't find much. I happened to notice that they had fires because my brother used to live over in the town of Okanogan.

Every year I fish Conconully res, and we see plenty of deer in the area. You could boat across the lake and hunt the hills above the lake, probably not too much pressure, but I could be wrong, you would need to be in good enough shape to hike up the hills that are on the other side of the lake.

I'd suggest getting off the beaten path and hike some ridges and glass. Let the binos do the legwork once you get up there..beautiful country.

I have hunted that area and usually it was hike to the top before light and use the binos from ridge to ridge. Lots of finger ridges and company on them. the people really move the deer around so if you have a good location sit and watch.

Good advice! Do some snooping on the Okanogan NF Website [http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/oka/index.shtml]. Some preliminary information can be gleaned from that in your research...for example:

Click on the " Fire and Aviation " section and you'll see that a brochure will be coming out soon describing their 2007 Prescribed Burn [Rx] Plan. Those would be key areas to keep in mind if they do in fact pull off the burns. Trust me, wildlife will move back into "the black" before the smoke settles, and it doesn't take long for new sprouts to pop up after fire has passed through an area. You can keep posted on fire progress via their website, or contact them for updated info.

Another potential source of info is the Maps and Brochures section. Click on that and you'll see that you can access "Forest Fire Wood Maps"...another good indication of past fire activity that may be helpful in your planning.

By all means, don't hesitate to contact the USFS personnel in the Forest Supervisor's Office, or out on the District in which you're thinking of concentrating on. Unless you run into a butthead, these people should provide you with some helpful information.

Good luck, and looking forward to seeing your report and pics next season.
